Obiettivo
The Physical-Technical Institute of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences operates one of the two largest solar furnaces in the world (with a power of 1 MWth) in the vicinity of Tashkent (Uzbekistan), as well as several smaller furnaces with special equipment. Very interesting and important development work has been performed over the last ten years, especially in the field of the production of ceramic materials (especially ceramic powders) and the heat treatment of special glasses. Due to the fact that the partners and clients of the institute were placed in different parts of the former Soviet Union (mainly Russia), the institute has large problems with further research and development work owing to lack of funds.
To avoid diluting valuable know-how through departure of scientists and technicians from the institute, this co-operative project between the institute and two solar furnace facilities and a leading materials research institute in western Europe will support further materials development in the Physical-Technical Institute, the transfer of the know-how into other institutions and contacts between the institute and west European industrial companies with the goal of a possible licensing of their materials and processes. A strong probability for the realisation of these goals can be expected because the two furnaces in Spain and Germany are linked into European and German networks.
Concerning the development of aluminium rich mullite glasses, a method is expected to be developed which guarantees a reproducible way of manufacturing this important material for insulation and thermal shock applications. A first necessity is the design and development of a quenching device. Two different designs will be built, or will already have been built, in Tashkent and Köln, to find out which one will lead to a better microstructure of the material.
Concerning the development of ceramic powders and fibres, the results can be recognised as transfer of know-how to west European industries and institutes for which the NIS participant will receive royalties and licenses for patents or developed materials. In addition, this participant will be enabled to build up a certain level in the microstructural investigation.
