Micro-inhomogeneities of glasses: identification, modification, consequences

Ziel

Glasses are subject to inhomogeneities of various characteristics like composition or structure and of resulting properties like elastic modules or dielectric tensor. These inhomogeneities are partly correlated and extend over various range scales between only a few to a few thousand angstroms. The connection between characteristics and properties and the influence of the spatial size of characteristic on property is not well understood.

A joint experimental investigation of inorganic glass-forming systems will be performed, aiming at questions of the spatial inhomogeneities of characteristics (micro-inhomogeneities). The aim of the project is to establish the spatial extent by combining various techniques (identification by ultrasound, optical and other scattering).

The project will concentrate on silicate glass forming systems with Pb, Al or Ga modifiers. These glasses have a low concentration of non bridging oxygen, dominating covalent bonds, low glass transition temperatures (150-300 degrees C); high refractive index (1.7-2.1); high density (4-6g cm{-3}). It is expected that uinh are reflected in optical, acoustic, and other properties. Indeed unexpected piezoelectric and magneto-optic have been found in Ga- and Pb-glasses. They may be due to transitions between structurally soft configurations. The identification and characterization of uinh by comparing results from different experiments (light, sound, neutrons, X-rays) will therefore be carried out.
