The mechanisms of human longevity: an association of parental characteristics and longevity of their children

Ziel

This project is directed towards increasing our knowledge about the mechanisms of human longevity and towards understanding the ageing process. There are two specific hypotheses which the project will test: whether the age-related accumulation of the DNA damage in parental germ cells is important for the longevity of the offspring; and whether parental age at conception is an important indicator of the longevity of the offspring.

To clarify the primary role of parental age on longevity of the offspring, the longevity differences between birth cohorts and between sexes will be taken into account since many confounding factors, such as ethnicity, geographical location, social and educational status, number of children in the family, may be statistically associated with parental age. The problem will be studied through adjusting for confounding factors. Sample data will be collected, analysed and prepared for scientific publication.
