Obiettivo
The network sets itself the task of assisting algebraic geometers and other mathematicians in the NIS, in particular to overcome difficulties of communication. At the same time it is intended to carry out joint research work in many different areas related to algebraic geometry. Activities will include visits by NIS mathematicians to European centres and practical assistance to NIS mathematicians in research.
One of the main aims of this network project is to help the Steklov Institute in Moscow survive as a top centre for research in mathematics and especially in algebraic geometry. Part of the allocated funds will help the Steklov Institute to keep their library maintain its good collection of mathematical journals and to provide computing equipment to the algebra section with resulting benefit to a large number of Moscow mathematicians. Without this support it might be impossible for the Steklov Institute to retain the top scientists currently working at the institute.
The remainder of the grant is divided among a network of mathematicians at 8 different centres of algebraic geometry in the NIS. The Yaroslavl group will receive a small contribution towards the expenses of producing a volume of conference proceedings; other centers are expected to join an e-mail network and to bid for small sums to cover items such as library or communications expenses, stipends or travel money.
