Highly efficient thin film solar cells based on chalcogenide semiconductors

Obiettivo

Polycrystalline thin film solar cells based on CuInSe2 and related materials, i.e. Cu(In,Ga)Se2 and CuIn(S,Se)2 are considered to be of major interest for the development of economic terrestrial photovoltaics due to the high conversion efficiency exceeding 16% which has been achieved with these devices.

The research will consist of the development of new low cost deposition techniques for highly efficient devices and the necessary electro-optical characterisation. Kharkov Polytechnical University will implement low-energy ion molecular beam assisted deposition of CuInSe2. This process is an innovative technology which improves the control of the growth parameters of polycrystalline thin films. Additionally, electro-deposition, the use of InSe as precursor, and structural analysis will be undertaken. The Institute of Physics of Solids and Semiconductors in Minsk, will implement laser assisted evaporation of Cu(In,Ga)Se2. Due to the high energy density in a laser beam, new properties as compared to conventional evaporation can be expected from this technology. Characterisation of barriers and heterojunctions will be carried out by the A.F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute in St. Petersburg.

The main goals of this project are the development and implementation of technologies for polycrystalline thin film solar cells in NIS countries. It is intended to collaborate closely with the EUROCIS consortium consisting of eleven European research groups. Four east European countries (Estonia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria) have been associated with this endeavour. The second task will be fulfilled by joined seminars, exchange of samples and scientists.

The growth of single phase chalcopyrite thin films by the new deposition methods developed in NIS institutes will be established. The quality of the films will be evaluated and compared with standard films deposited in Stuttgart. The tendency to form secondary phases, the segregation behaviour and their influence on the electrical and structural properties, which appears to be of major importance for high quality thin films, will be evaluated for the new deposition methods. Economic aspects such as utilisation of the material will be taken into account for the new processes. An analysis of the loss mechanisms will be performed in comparison with standard devices in order to identify benefits or critical issues of the new processes. The outcome of this analysis of the deposition processes will lead to the development of post-deposition treatments in order to adjust the properties for high quality thin films leading to fabrication. A joint publication will be submitted to the European Conference on Photovoltaics at the end of the project. Joint publications will be made in scientific journals on the results of the technological comparisons.
