Study of Excitation Schemes and Kinetic Processes in Gas Targets Pumped by Hard Ionizing Radiation

Obiettivo

The use of powerful efficient sources of narrow-band, non- coherent radiation has opened new opportunities in the field of high technologies: photo-vapor-deposition and thin-film- processing in microelectronics, treatment of dangerous chemical wastes, control of chemical reactions etc. Despite the fact that these light sources frequently use the same active media as e.g. excimer lasers, their optimum pumping conditions appear to be different as compared the corresponding lasers.
Known kinetic models of the laser media appear to be inapplicable in the case of spontaneous radiation sources, because they consider sets of kinetic processes unrelated to spontaneous emission and consequently kinetic models for most of the gas mixtures are not developed, yet. On many occasions rate constants have not even been estimated. Therefore kinetic processes responsible for efficient spontaneous emission are still poorly understood.
Research on the pliarities of pumping- and kinetic processes in gas targets excited by hard ionizing radiation such as ion- and electron beams, Gamma-rays and discharges with a hard component in the electron energy distribution is proposed aiming at development of novel powerful high- efficiency sources of spontaneous and coherent radiation in the UV and VUV regions, improvement of radiation parameters of known optical and active media, estimation of the potential of their application in areas such as plasma-chemistry, photo-lithography, thin-film processing, treatment of dangerous chemical wastes and etc. and the search for new efficient optical and active media. Mixtures of halogens and vapors of alkali metals with rare gases as well as rare gases and their mixtures using electron and ion beam pumping and electrical discharg excitation are suggested as a ject of investigation.
As a result of the joint work under this project the following results are expected:
Obtaining new data on the pliarities of pumping and kinetic processes in gas targets pumped by hard ionizing particles;
evaluation of new optical media, optimization of pumping parameters of known optical and active media in the VUV and UV regions and development of novel promising sources of spontaneous and coherent radiation;
creation of advanced, universal computer models of gas optical and active media pumped by hard ionizing radiation;
development of practical prototypes of sources of coherent and non-coherent radiation in the UV and VUV regions showing promise in terms of their applications in areas of high technology.
