Hybrid diffractive - graded index optical structures for telecommunication systems

Obiettivo

The project is aimed to establishing a new -field of optical research combining graded-index (GRIN) optics and diffractive optics, that is mainly applicable for purposes of optical telecommunication. Development of GRIN optics made possible the formation of high quality elements for fiber telecommunication systems, different light focusing systems, etc. Diffractive optics approach to control light is rapidly becoming feasible in a large number of applications as a result of the use of microlithographic fabrication technology. The combination of GRIN and diffractive optics will provide several advantages: (a) possibility to perform most of the focusing or collimation by the GRIN and the beam shaping by the diffractive element; (b) optical elements of both types have flat surfaces and can be easily joined together to build multielement systems in the form of stable solid stacks; (c) allowing to produce structures that can not be made with traditional optical techniques; (d) potentially low cost of the combined optical systems. The partners from Finland offer their knowledge on the design and fabrication of diffractive optics. They have one of the most extensive collections of theoretical design tools available. Also they will perform fabrication of diffractive structures by microlithography, using electron-beam lithography, reactive ion etching and thin-film deposition combined with lift-off. Additionally they will participate in the use of technique of diffusion to generate refractive-index modulated diffractive structures, in the simulation of ion- exchange processes and in the testing and characterization of the finished components and systems. The partner from Spain will contribute to the fabrication of diffractive GRIN elements by techniques of photolithography, direct laser printing and ion-exchange in glass. They will provide phase characterization of diffractive/GRIN structures by microinterferometry and theoretical designs of different GRIN elements for coupling purposes. The partners from Russia will be dealing with applications of designed by the partners glassy materials, techniques of ion exchange and diffusion, and developed by the institutions GRIN elements to the formation of combined GRIN/diffractive optical structures, to numerical simulation of the structures, their activities will be also concentrated on formation of diffractive elements via photocrystallization in designed glasses and via electrically stimulated diffusion. Final coupling of the designed elements with optical fibers and testing of the system as a whole will be performed by Russian side in collaboration with University of Joensuu. The project will result in the development of a novel hybrid GRIN/diffractive optical technology and in design of new elements for telecommunication. The development of scientific and commercial instruments that employ these new elements in telecommunication applications will begin during the project.
