Synthesis and application of new heterobimetallic complexes as original precursors for the preparation of thin film materials by the technique of chemical vapour deposition

Obiettivo

Objectives and interest: This project deals with the preparation of thin film materials containing two metal elements, using the technique of chemical vapour deposition starting from metal-organic precursors (MOCVD). Concerned materials are either metals or ceramic oxides and concerned metal elements are Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Al, Ga, In, Y and the lanthanides. In order to transport the two metal elements in the gas phase, it is proposed to use single source precursors that is, in the present case, heterobimetallic complexes. Heterobimetallic complexes which respond to the criteria of chemical vapour deposition are but scarce. The main objective of the project is to synthesize, characterize and apply such compounds. Generally speaking, heterobimetallic complexes are interesting objects of modern coordination chemistry.
The classical multi-source approach using monometallic precursors will be also worked out emphasizing two important features: i) the quest of precursors having low temperatures of decomposition in view of coating thermally fragile surfaces and, ii) the quest of oxygen free precursors as a way to prevent formation of oxide phases during the growth of metallic films. Reseach activities and presentation of results: The research activities are divided in two parts. Part I concerns the preparation and characterization of the precursors: chemical synthesis of complexes (I-1), validation of the complexes as precursors for MOCVD (I-2), full characterization of valided precursors (I-3). Part II concerns the use of newly prepared precursors in MOCVD experiments: investigation of the thermal decomposition of the precursors during the CVD process (II-1), characterization of obtained thin film materials (II-2). The results will be presented as articles in international journals.
The five teams: The teams involved in the project have complementary know-hows in chemistry, thermodynamics, techniques of characterization and CVD. Most of them know each other and collaborate somehow or other. The presented project would reinforce and extend existing collaborations and induce new ones. A fascinating aspect of this project is that it goes from pure chemistry to material science. The synergy resulting from complementarity of skills and know-hows should be a reason of success.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte
