Obiettivo
The main goal of project is the investigation of superhigh (1E14 to 1E18 eV) and ultrahigh (1E18 to 1E20eV) energy cosmic rays (CR).
The main experimental goals of the investigations are to obtain new experimental data concerning the energy spectrum, primary mass composition and anisotropy of CR and the theoretical analysis of this data.
The solution of the outstanding problems is possible only in a close co-operation between CR people having a wide range of experience in experimental and theoretical EAS investigation.
The collaboration will carry out a combined analysis of the EAS primary energy spectrum before and after "the knee" at 3.1E15 eV obtained independently first at the MSU detector array and more recently by the HEGRA detector array on La Palma. Comparison of the EAS muon data, either side of "the knee" is also most important. The analysis of these muon data must give the data on the mass composition of the primary CR. The available data will also allow the calibration of the EAS methods for determining the mass composition and primary energy determination at energies 1E14 to 1E15 eV. This calibration is very important for the interpretation of measurements made in the ultrahigh energy range (1E17 to 1E21 eV).
The main theoretical problems of generation and propagation of superhigh energy CR will also be tackled. Simultaneously the construction of the first stage of EAS-1000 (the EAS-100 array) will take place with the help of further financial sources, mainly from Russia. This array will be constructed by gradually increasing the area under operation. Thus it will allow an increasing volume of information to be obtained on the primary energy spectrum, anisotropy and sources of ultrahigh energy CR. The developed theory of generation and propagation of ultrahigh energy CR will help the analysis and interpretation of the experimental data. The new scientific results will be presented as papers in scientific journals and reports at International Conferences. Some part of the total funding requested will be spent for the construction of the detectors and electronics for EAS-100 array which is under construction at present.
