Development of the high rate RPC TOF detector for particle identification in the CBM experiment

Ziel

The INTAS GSI-RPC project aims to contribute to the design parameters and the realisation of the CBM time-of-flight detector that has to deliver excellent time resolution (better than 100ps) under very demanding conditions, e.g. at single particle count rates of more than 50kHz/cm2. The project is part of the European effort to design an experiment addressing the properties of strongly interacting systems at the highest possible baryon density. For the necessary particle identification systems detailed simulations and RPC counter prototype developments will be pursued to address the following questions:

1)Determination of the necessary counter performance (resolution, rate, granularity) as function of the laboratory angle by means of Monte Carlo simulations;

2)Relationship between time resolution and rate and its dependence of material parameters (e.g. resistivity of the dielectric glass) and optimisation of the electrode material with respect to performance and cost;

3)Optimisation of the readout structures to allow to cover large area
(>100m2) at reasonable cost;

4)Determination of critical system parameters (cross talk in multi hit events, reference clock distribution, time walk) that need to be resolved before launching the construction phase of the experiment.
The results are of paramount importance to the Technical Proposal of the CBM experiment and will be incorporated therein.
