Algebraic and deduction methods in non-classical logic and their applications to Computer Science

Obiettivo

Distributed and mobile systems are collecting more and more interest in the world of communications. Much of their success is due to the possibility of spreading knowledge, information, and services among different locations in order to realize concurrent, fault tolerant, and adaptive systems. As a matter of fact, one of the most novel and distinctive features of mobile systems is the capability of processes, besides information, to move between different locations, so as to better fit the evolving environment. Furthermore, such a complex behavior is often subject to both temporal and spatial constraints (e.g. real-time systems). Thus, specific methodologies are required to deal with uncertainty, redundancy, and mobility of information in strongly distributed systems. Non-classical logics, such as logics of incomplete information, many-valued logics and fuzzy logics (as well as constructive variants of them), sub-structural logics, spatio-temporal logics, and extensions of intuitionist propositional logic by means of "temporal" modalities, emerged as promising tools to formally specify and verify desirable properties of strongly distributed systems. The central objective of this research project is to provide analytical, computational, and algorithmic tools for the implementation and mechanization of non-classical logics. The main deliverable of our effort will be a Handbook containing enough information for an enlightening view on the issue at the ground of a sensible implementation of the principal families of non-classical logics. Instrumental to our approach will be a preliminary taxonomy and classification of collections of non-classical logics and of possible computational engines at the ground of their potential mechanization.
This claim will be subsequently sustained by an in-depth investigation on the tools available for these representative logics. Hence, the research will concentrate on the following points:
the classification and the study of the expressive power of various applied non-classical logics,
the development of analytic deduction systems for the above mentioned logics,
the investigation of the complexity of logical deduction in such systems,
the clarification from a proof-theoretical perspective of the relations between lattice logics and other families of non-classical logics such as sub-structural logics and many-valued logics.
Concurrently, inspection on the tools will be made, in order to mechanize the task of proving a specific property for a specific logic:
deduction systems will be constructed on the basis of uniform translations,
the existence of a mechanism for producing an axiomatization of the bisimulation quantifiers closure of a logic from an existing axiomatization of the base logic will be investigated,
and the development of correspondence theory meant to provide a method of generation of deduction rules for given semantic constraints in models of a non-classical logic will be exploited.
