Selection and cultivation of Rhodiola rosea L. based on molecular, phytochemical and physiological methods

Obiettivo

Selection and cultivation of golden root (Rhodiola rosea L.) based on molecular, phytochemical and physiological methods. Rhodiola rosea is a species endemic to many parts of the world, including the Carpathian Mountains. Golden root is highly valued in many herbal remedy treatments and traditional medicines. This is due to the high accumulation, especially in the rhizome, of secondary metabolites that have been shown to possess different medical activities and valuable adaptogens effects. Because of these properties, golden root has been collected intensively from the nature, and is now a rare and endangered species in many parts of the world, especially in Carpathian Mountains.

The goal of the proposed project is to provide selection and clonal micropropagation of R. rosea and its cultivation in conditions of Moldova. In addition to the economic benefits, this would also decrease demand for collection from nature, thereby safeguarding the remaining natural populations of this plant.

To achieve this goal, we have identified next objectives:
1) analyse the genetic heterogeneity, biological (morphological) diversity, variation of physiologic characteristics and secondary metabolite accumulation in rhizomes of R. rosea genotypes from our collection and identify suitable breeding stocks with high levels of medicinally important natural products;
2) select the suitable genotypes based on mutagenic and antimutagenic activities;
3) realize the propagation of selected R. rosea lines by in vitro micropropagation;
4)develop agronomic techniques of cultivation and carry out the cultivation of selected descendents.

We expect to determine the molecular markers of several lines of R. rosea clones with high viability and content of secondary metabolites. These clones will be multiplied and cultivated in conditions of Moldova. Obtained scientific results, the collection and clones of R. rosea will serve for the further amelioration of this species and promote protection of species from its disappearance in Carpathian Mountains. The work would contribute to the increased knowledge about the biology of Rhodiola rosea and requirement for its cultivation for local climatic and soil conditions while still being able to obtain secondary metabolites with adaptogenic effects.

At the end of this project we expect to obtain Rhodiola rosea vegetative material cultivated in field, with content of secondary metabolites that is comparable or higher than that characteristic for rhizomes collected in the mountains. The project aims is to introduce a new species into Moldova agriculture, for the long-term benefit of the rural sector and the environment. The scientific and agronomic problems of introduction of R. rosea in Moldova will be discussed at the CABT Web Site - the project link will be on coordinator Web Site http://www.iripz.pl(si apre in una nuova finestra)(si apre in una nuova finestra), published as practical recommendations and will be presented at conferences and symposia.
