Preventive Safety For Un-protected Road User

Obiettivo

The analysis of accident figures in Europe reports a very huge number of collisions between pedestrian and vehicles, these collisions cause about 12% of the accidents and about 15% of the total number of dead. The sum between pedestrian figures and the number of cyclists and motorcyclists dead in collisions against vehicles (6% and 5% respectively) goes over 26% of the total number of dead and about 25% of the injured. Starting from this scenario, the general objective is the improvement of safety of vulnerable citizens (pedestrian, cyclists, motorcyclists) in urban and rural areas, based on the interaction of enhanced autonomous on-vehicle sensors (based on laser, microwave and computer vision technologies) with co-operative means carried by the vulnerable road users (transponders, microwave/optical reflectors, etc.). The development, evaluation and validation of the autonomous and/or co-operative detection means, in real environment or in an "ad hoc" established test site for the most critical scenarios are the operative objective of the project, both at automobile and commercial vehicle level. Complementing objectives are the evaluation of socio/economic impacts and actions for dissemination of the potential products defined in the project.

Work description:
To achieve the project goals, PROTECTOR will adopt the recommended phases of RTD&D projects: the project starts with the analysis of the application concept and related users needs; from the results obtained, it determines the system requirements in terms of sensors and system architecture. The next step will be the building of the demonstrators and their validation, in a dedicated test site. The last phase will concern the exploitation of the results, with relevance on ISO standard recommendations, system concept, architecture, safety, dependability and legal issues, including risk analysis.

Milestones:
The project planning follows a conventional timing of work and can be summarised by major milestones. First of all, it is necessary to perform a detailed user needs investigation and to point out the system concept, the operational requirements and the technical specifications. Naturally, the architectural decomposition should also be considered. Other important topics are the identification of the sensorial system, which has to be adopted, and the evaluation of the sensors system ready for installation. After this, it is possible to choose the demonstrator vehicle and the test site ready for the demonstration, including standardisation guidelines. At least, it is very important to take into account the system evaluation results (including final users) and the technological implementation plan, that is: products and spin-offs.
