Real Time Motion Compensated Reconstruction and Visualisation for Dynamic Computed Tomography

Obiettivo

Novel reconstruction and visualisation of image sequences in real-time on X-ray tomography devices, that includes motion compensation, dose reduction and combines innovative multi-row 2D detector and an ultra fast rotating gantry in advanced computed tomography (CT) fluoroscopy, for improving medical diagnosis, radiotherapy planning and interventional radiology. Evaluation of the system and the expected goals are in accordance with the Quality Criteria for CT Report (EUR 16262).

Objectives:
The objective of DynCT is to define and develop a novel Hardware/Software-based reconstruction and visualisation system for High-Performance Medical Computed Tomography. The system addresses two hot issues in this medical scanning modality: real-time 3D cone-beam reconstruction and organ motion-independent CT reconstruction. The two clinical fields that this project is focused on are: Real-time motion-compensated 3D CT Fluoroscopy, for real-time interventional applications and Organ motion-free 2D/3D Computed Tomography, for off-line diagnostic purposes. Such medical systems are not currently available.

Work description:
The technical work to be performed is divided into the following parts:
the user contribution, consisting of needs specification and validation of results which will drive the work of the project to the expected goals;
implementation of novel real-time 3D CT Fluoroscopy scanner with multi-row 2D detector and ultra-fast rotating gantry, including fast data link and safety constraints to operate the overall system;
implementation of the signal processing algorithms for 3D cone-beam CT reconstruction, including a real-time block pipelined reconstruction, two motion estimation and compensation techniques to take over scanner limitations, algorithm parallelisation, development of a new conformal CT fluoroscopy concept, and implementation of a Dynamic CT simulation software for testing and optimising;
implementation of an off-line diagnostic tool for radiotherapy treatment on body areas with motion, based on the previous motion-compensation algorithms adapted to conventional CT without real-time constraints.

The software will be embedded into an available medical workstation, corresponding to an intermediate project milestone;
development of a user-friendly image visualisation interface that will incorporate the special 3D CT video display requirements, free-hand interface and virtual reality goggles, and will provide health-care specialists with an intuitive tool for performing more accurate and successful interventions;
building of a scaleable parallel computing architecture that fulfils the computing requirements imposed by very large real time systems;
integration of the system, that implies a delicate work of co-operation among all the partners and that will deliver a Real-time 3D CT fluoroscopy scanner;
validation of the prototype by the hospital to demonstrate the validity of the concept and its acceptance by medical experts;
specification of business plan to set the guidelines of prototype exploitation.

Milestones:
M1(12) System Design is settled, its implementation starts from here on
M2(18) Preliminary prototype for off-line diagnostic applications is complete, its validation in hospitals starts from here
M3(24) The first prototype, the 2D CT with motion compensation, is validated by hospitals, exploitation starts.

Its performance is the best reference for the ultimate system
M4(36) The novel Real-time 3D CT Fluoroscopy system is built and validated by hospitals.
Its exploitation and commercialisation starts.
