Learning Environments for the Digital Academy

Obiettivo

LEDA (Learning Environments for the Digital Academy) will define, develop and test a networked system and the underlying pedagogical procedures to facilitate and promote active learning experiences in the context of international student-centred post-graduate education. LEDA will support the international exchange of learning experiences, research and development - and the project-outcomes thereby stimulating co-operative learning by considering students to be important actors in the learning process. The system will enhance the quality of education in the field of design for digital media by facilitating learning processes that are as close as possible to production processes in the field, thus catering for changing demands from industry and society.

LEDA will focus on the exchange, storage and retrieval of articulated learning experiences between students, academic staff and industry, thereby capitalising on knowledge generated by students within research and design programs. LEDA will generate an international knowledge-base on production processes, methods and techniques in the field of digital media allowing institutions of higher education and industry to interactively access research outcomes, product demonstrators, student portfolio's and learning materials.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Research, carried out in the LEDA program, will provide both educational methodology, procedures and formats as advanced information engineering solutions in the area of multimedia asset storage and retrieval mechanisms. As part of the educational research carried out in the context of LEDA, configurable middleware will be designed which will generate learning environments that meet personal needs in different educational contexts. These environments will be formatted to promote the articulation of key components of tacit knowledge that comprises such an important part of the knowledge necessary in design. As part of this process-oriented approach, the system components of the LEDA programme will support both teachers and students in monitoring and guiding learners throughout the educational process. LEDA will consist of configurable middleware, formatted by educational experts based on specific educational processes. Based on database-middleware communication, personalised learning environments will be generated, enabling students to articulate critical steps in their development and publish research and project outcomes. LEDA will incorporate data managers to support the on-line storage and retrieval of knowledge-assets using standardised data formats and advanced metadata retrieval methods. LEDA will cater for the needs of different types of users. It will enable:
- academic staff to closely monitor educational processes independent of time and place constraints;- academic staff to access individual and collective portfolios in order to provide them with qualitative coaching instruments;
- students to learn from the experiences and knowledge of others and reflect on their own personal development;
- and industry to have access to an expanding database with just-in-time knowledge, in a rapidly changing professional field, regarding university based research results, state-of-the-art technology, and innovative design processes

MILESTONES
-M1, User requirements: these are the result of the research on user requirements, pedagogical procedures, technical requirements and pedagogical requirements.
-M2 Technical specification: this will set out the definition of the core system architecture, associated managers, components, user environments, Interfaces and communication tools.
- M3, first integrated system v1 (components and system); this will deliver the first working prototype of the LEDA system with full functionality.
- M4, Results evaluation, final prototype: this will result in the evaluated, adjusted and populated final LEDA system.
