Obiettivo
Eye-2-Eye develops empirical Fitness-for-Purpose models of Information Society Media that enable manufacturers, system integrators, service providers, network operators, standards bodies and users to objectively select and configure equipment and networks to match the varying characteristics and purposes of real-time human-human communication.
The project shall:
- produce, disseminate and exploit Fitness-for-Purpose Evaluation Methodology, Guidelines and Cost-Benefit Analysis Tool;
- verify the appropriae technical, psychological and environmental variables representing current and future technology, applications and services;
- identify the impact of different media (voice telephony, virtual reality, videotelephony, face-to-face communication) on key human communication goals (problem solving, instruction, interviewing, persuasion, acquaintance relations) for services that as many persons as possible can use (Design for All);
- derive a Fitness-for-Purpose Model linking human communication efficiency and user satisfaction with Quality of Service of equipment, networks (IP, mobile, ISDN), etc.;
- identify a usable Benefit value system for use in Cost Benefit Modelling.

Work description:
The project responds to the need for the developers and purchasers of different Media for real-time person-person communication to be able to make rational decisions on Fitness-for-Purpose from a user perspective. The project consolidates psychological, technical, user and socio-economic parameters concerned with person-person communication. The project develops a Fitness-for-Purpose Evaluation Method, a Cost-Benefit Analysis Tool and Fitness-for-Purpose Guidelines. Eye-2-Eye addresses the full range of emerging audio-visual Media aimed at enabling person-person communication over distance for services that as many persons as possible can use. Results are produced for selecting between these Media for different uses and economic resources. The Fitness-for-Purpose Analyses are performed on empirical results derived by the project in both laboratory (controlled) and field (semi-controlled) experiments. This ensures covering the range of human, technical and scientific issues involved. Base-line tests o communication tasks and media are performed to evaluate empirically how the different media are fit for specific communication goals and user characteristics given optimal settings of technical parameters. The Fitness-for-Purpose model produces comparable estimates for each media and communication task. These are tested in both laboratory and field experiments. The dissemination of the results is targeted to specific interest groups that range from Manufacturers-to-Users and include Standards bodies an the projects of the 5th Framework Programme. Plans are developed for the continued exploitation of the Fitness-for-Purpose Method, Tool and Guidelines beyond the project, including consultancy and new services and products.
