Interacting With Eyes: Gaze Assisted Access To Information In Multiple Languages

Ziel

The achievements of the project were on different levels. There were results in
(1) the basic technologies, such as eye tracking devices and parsing modules;
(2) middleware that helps to build applications on top of the basic technology; and
(3) end-user applications.
The roles of the partners are best described through their involvement in the development of the two end-user prototypes. iTutor consists of a head-mounted device that is operated through eye-gaze and speech interaction. It brings an information space (such as a service manual) into the real space of the user, allowing them to be merged. The user can stay focused on a service or repair task while browsing information, hands-free, in the information space. The lead partner in developing iTutor has been Giunti. Eye-tracking and HMD expertise and development has been provided by SMI, and UNO has both produced basic data on gaze behaviour in a setting used by iTutor, as well as participated in the evaluation of the iTutor prototype. iDict is a gaze-assisted environment for reading electronic documents written in a foreign language (English). When the reader encounters difficulties, the system is supposed to detect this (based on changes in eye gaze behaviour), access a dictionary to find the translation for the problematic word or phrase, and render the translation (either on the screen or audibly). The lead partner in developing iDict has been UTA. Eye-tracking expertise and development has been provided by SMI, and UNO has both produced basic data on gaze behaviour in a setting used by iDict, as well as participated in the evaluation of the iDict prototype. Conexor has produced both the analysis modules for text that is shown to the user, and the modules that interface iDict with electronic dictionaries.
