Optical Compensation For Displays

Obiettivo

Proposal' s objective is to improve the viewing angle performance of different types of Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) widely used in the consumer and professional market. Image degradation with viewing angle of LCDs is due to intrinsic birefringence of liquid crystal molecules. It is thus necessary to compensate the LC molecules with layers of birefringent films positioned on each side of the LC cell. Up to now compensation films available do not reach all the requirements needed by LCD makers. Our goal is to study and develop compensation films by exploring two new technologies developed in Europe: Holography and Polymerised Nematics. The consortium contains two technology providers and two LCD makers, producing LCDs ranging from multiplexed low content to actively addressed high-resolution displays. One LCD maker intends to integrate the developed films in his LCD production line.

Work description:
The compensation films will be developed by Thomson-CSF LCR and Rolic in collaboration with end-users Thomson-LCD and Optrex: film validation will be performed on Test Vehicles TVa and TVb consisting of one chosen display from each LCD maker Da and Db. The optical performance obtained on the TVs will be compared to the targeted one, expressed by the end-users. The compensation film development is divided into two phases, and the workpackages follow the different steps of this development.
WP1: specifications by the end-users of the targeted performance for the Test Vehicles TVa and TVb.
Phase 1: Film study
WP2: simulation of the optimum combination of birefringent films for TVa and TVb. As there are two test vehicles and two technologies, four case have to be simulated and optimised
WP3: first prototype P1 of compensation films of small dimensions, comparison with simulation.
WP4: prototype validation: P1 will be then associated with the display to compensate and the obtained optical performance will be compared to the targeted one.
Qualification of P1: if the obtained performance is satisfactory, P1 will be qualified for the following step.
Phase 2: Validation on displays
WP5: realisation of a prototype P2 on plastic substrate (dimension 70x70 mm2)
WP6: sticking of P2 on displays Da and Db: test vehicles TVa and TVb - Optical measurements on TVa and TVb.
WP7: assessment and evaluation: the two technologies will be compared and Thomson-LCD and Optrex will present an implementation plan (IP).
The first results on small size samples indicate that films performance are in agreement with simulations, and that can satisfy the users requirements.

Milestones:
Milestone M1, at the mid-term of the project, will permit to decide if the new technologies developed in the OCDIS project are likely to satisfy the needs in terms of viewing angle performance of display products expressed by the end-users. The main expected results are the two Test Vehicles, which will be composed of a display product from Thomson- LCD and Optrex compensated with the developed technology, that is to say having those films mounted on the LC cell before the polarisers.
