Ziel
The Wireless Strategic Initiative (WSI) is a project that provides a focus for the conceptual work of future wireless systems and that opens a range of the most advanced research prototypes and testbeds to other successful projects with a wireless component.
The WSI offers member projects
- participation in the definition of the WWN (Wireless Worldnet), the next generation of wireless Networks.
- testing and validation of new applications using research prototypes and advanced technology testbeds, made available by the WSI consortium.
Related to requirements, these testbeds may include UMTS, GPRS, WAP, Bluetooth and HIPERLAN test facilities.
The WSI consortium, committed to organising the conceptual work and provide access to the facilities, is formed by four leading European telecommunications suppliers:
- Alcatel
- Ericsson
- Nokia
- Siemens.
Objectives:

- to kick start the market for future wireless applications and services
- to develop the basis for the definition of concepts for future wireless systems beyond third generation mobile radio systems that will be called the WWN (Wireless World-Net) in this document
- to create and maintain industrial momentum in wireless communications, services and applications through R&D collaboration.
WSI Project Objectives:
- to focus research capacities on strategic objectives and essential issues through active information and the formation of Innovation Cells
- to offer a platform that enables synergy among projects in the wireless area of the IST Programme
- to disseminate information
- to significantly reduce the time-to-market for future wireless products and services through timely experimentation with research prototypes and collaboration with leading-edge users in trials
- to accelerate the emergence of standards
- to support interoperability in and between wireless technologies.
Work description:
The means to achieve these objectives is to share the R&D effort among a number of partners, with a focus on providing common facilities for the matching of user requirements with new technology, e.g. in close to reality test beds.
WSI offers Innovation Cells for leading technology developments providing research facilities for the validation of technology and for the validation of standard contributions, ahead of product innovation. As such it offers a multi-vendor, multi-operator environment based on the collective effort and resources of the partners.
Innovation Cells group member projects around certain themes. They act as competence centres within their respective area, and may be consulted by member projects on technically strategic matters.
The following Cells are currently planned:
IC 1 Applications and Testbeds
IC 2 Building the wireless future.
The focus of the innovation cells might be adapted according to the requirements of the projects that intend to join the WSI.
Innovation Cell 1 makes testbeds available to member projects. They include testbeds based on the following technologies: UMTS, GPRS, Bluetooth, WAP and HIPERLAN.
Innovation Cell 2 provides the platform and forum for the WWN, the next generation of wireless systems.
