VIRTUAL ORTHOPEADIC EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY

Obiettivo

The objective of V?U is enhanced student-teacher interaction in Orthopaedics. 1) Enhanced multimedia learning material, consensually agreed at the European level, will be developed, edited and made accessible on-line (through Internet/Intranet), or off-line; 2) Enhanced remote learning and interaction between learning surgeons and experts will take place, thanks to a virtual class; 3) Enhanced skill acquisition and evaluation will be proposed, thanks to surgical simulators.

OBJECTIVES
Today the specialist skills of orthopaedics are learned by the traditional qualitative apprenticeship system. There are major issues with such an educational system, accounting for the great variation in orthopaedic practice throughout Europe: - Absence of consensual and quantitatively based "gold standard", - "Chapel effect", - Variance of surgeons' skills, - Limited surgical influence upon the introduction of ICT techniques. Establishing a Virtual Orthopaedic European University meets these challenges. The objectives of V?U are enhanced student-teacher interaction in Orthopaedics: - Enhanced learning material, accessible on-line (through Internet/Intranet), or off-line: - Multi-media educational Orthopaedics modules, - Reviewed IGOS expertise, thanks to a virtual, multi-centric, and permanently updated observatory of ICT in Orthopaedics; - A virtual class, enabling distant interaction between learning surgeons and experts; - Simulators of surgical procedures, designed to facilitate skill acquisition and evaluation, and providing "procedural" complement to the "declarative" content of the Multi-Media educational Orthopaedics modules.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
a) Orthopaedics Knowledge structuring and dissemination The potentialities of multimedia shall be offered to Orthopaedic experts, thanks to "editing engineers", specialists in multimedia capable to understand the particularities of surgical knowledge editing.Particular attention shall be paid to the user needs, thanks to a specific ergonomics analysis technique that will help identify those points where education is critical. The Orthopaedic knowledge multimedia editing process will be modelled, resulting in a "template" course that will be proposed to the expert for instantiation. A general framework for integrating several such courses in an homogeneous format shall be proposed. This general framework shall also help integrating these educational modules with the other educational components of VOEU.
b) Course organisation The interaction between one expert and a set of students (the classical "class" paradigm), wwill be virtually implemented, and its educational interest tested in the field of Orthopaedics learning.
c) Knowledge production by scientific observation A common evaluation methodology of the medical and technical issues of Image Guided Orthopaedic Surgery procedures will be defined and implemented. A backbone of an evaluation network will be designed and run as a "virtual observatory" of the introduction of ICT in Orthopaedics. The data that this observatory will gather will be periodically reviewed and analysed, to extract relevant knowledge about the way surgical procedures should be performed.
d) Development of the practical and theoretical skills of its students by direct experimentation. Surgical simulators shall be developed in a user centred strategy, thanks to a careful ergonomics analysis. They will feature the major available types of technologies enabling immersion of the user in a virtual world where visual integration and hand-eye co-ordination are key issues.
