Optoelectronic Eye-up floating DIsplay BUS

Obiettivo

RTD of novel display devices; their integration into advanced information display systems for improved performance of users under time stress, such as drivers, medical doctors, etc. The system includes flat-panel display and light sources, a compact light-guiding optics (OLG), a variable-transmittance optical window (VTO), driver electronics, and optional interfaces for upgrade; 3) a fully integrated system will be evaluated in feasibility test beds, by our industrial partner. Innovative Aspects of the Proposal include a) compact LGO bus for image projection of fisee-thoughtful capability that enables the superposition of the projected display image on top of the background scene, with the optics being independent of aspheric surfaces and therefore relatively simple; b) the VTO enables the real-time correction of background illumination by sensor feedback, for insuring constant display contrast; c) compact display panels/driver electronics.

Objectives:
The overall objective is RTD of novel information display components, and their integration into compact advanced information sensing and display systems for improved performance of users under operational and time stress, such as car drivers, medical doctors, assembly workers, etc;
The specific objectives are RTD and characterisation of novel compact light-guides involving advanced diffractive holographic optical elements, variable-transmittance optical windows, miniature display and light sources, associated driver electronics and interfaces for system enhancement. The electro-optic and ergonomic performance objectives of the fully integrated system are for an automotive head-up display under enhanced-vision assistance.

Work description:
Brief description of the work packages (WPs) to show our project approach:WP0. Concept Design: the optoelectronic concepts of the light guides, VTO windows and display system, in view of the ergonomic and technical inputs will be closed. Preliminary integration and packaging concepts will be outlined.
WP1. Optical Light Guides (OLGs): the optical design and fabrication of diffractive optical elements (DOEs) for the coupling and decoupling of optical waves into and out of flat 2D OLGs;
WP2. Variable Transittance Optics (VTO): the design and fabrication of VTO windows based on novel LC technology, in conjunction with real-time detector feedback electronics;
WP3. Primary Display Sources: the design and fabrication of miniature LCDs for simple video or graphics display, together with backlight sources and their driver electronics. Specification and characterisation of commercial miniature LCDs;
WP4. System Integration: To test the operation of the assembled system and all its subsystems. To design and manufacture the mechanical components which are needed to assemble the system and install it on-board for the required on-the-field testing;
WP5. Assessment of performances: to assess the OEDIBUS system characteristics in terms of optical and photometric performances and its usability with respect to ergonomics and human factors;
WP6. Project Management: The management team consisting of the project co-ordinator and the WP managers will be nominated. The management will be responsible for periodical work meeting and deliverables collection and distribution, project adjustments, as well as dissemination and exploitation planning.
