Applications in car of novel micromotors and their interactive control network

Obiettivo

The general objectives of the NET-MOTOR project are:
- to adapt to three automotive components efficient, robust and low cost novel piezo-micromotors, already demonstrated to be advantageous in a variety of other applications;
- to develop an overall interactive (via display) control network for the multitude of these novel micromotors that could be implemented in a car;
- to demonstrate that the implement solutions are extendable with minor effort to other components in the car.

Objectives:
The general objectives of the NET-MOTOR project are:
- to adapt to three automotive components efficient, robust and low cost novel piezo-micromotors, already demonstrated to be advantageous in a variety of other applications;
- to develop an overall interactive (via display) control network for the multitude of these novel micromotors that could be implemented in a car;
- to demonstrate that the implement solutions are extendable with minor effort to other components in the car.

Work description:
The project is structured in seven work-packages organised as per maximising the interdisciplinary expertise of the three partners:
- IDEA Institute: Major European developer of prototype cars, acting as principal component developer and on the car system integrator.
- Nanomotion: Provider of compact, robust and low cost piezomotors.
- Centro Ricerche Fiat: User, programmer of the on-board processor and provider of the interfacing electronic with the motors.

WP1 Specification and system configurations: Specification will be given on: size of micromotors, interface from the on-board microprocessor the display and the micromotors, input-output display-user, network cabling, preferred configurations of the components.
WP2 Components design and development: The new component will be designed and fabricated for optimum coupling with the micromotors.
WP3 Refinement of micromotors with integrated electronics: The existing technology will be adapted for the specific designs. The development of an integrated electronic module to drive on loco the motor.
WP4 Integration of micromotor in the components and test: The developed micromotors will be coupled to the three systems. The complete systems will be tested in accordance to the automotive specification.
WP5 Programming of the on-board microprocessor for remote control: The idea is to use the risk like processor available on the dashboard and typically dedicated to control and manage a variety of other functions. The processor will be reprogrammed to drive the motor and to communicate with the motor from the display.
WP6 Motor interfacing and Interactive Display: An electronic module will be made to interface microprocessor - micromotors, panel control and display.
WP 7 Overall on-the-car system integration and tests: The components with the novel micromotors, display and control logic will be experimented installed on the car.

Milestones:
Demonstration of modified micro-motors with integrated electronics.
Demonstration of the complete three systems working with the new micromotors.
Demonstration of the implemented network allowing the control of the micromotor from the navigation display panel.
Assessment of the novel micromotors on the chosen systems with full respect of automotive specifications.
Demonstration of the targeted cost of the new system.
Demonstration of more efficient systems solution with micromotors.
