Extraction and synthesis of environmental information from multi-source data

Obiettivo

The project develops and demonstrates advanced computer methods to extract and synthesise environmental parameters within selected problem areas characterised by very large amounts of heterogeneous data, including satellite EO data. Such multi-source data can provide useful information if automated algorithms and human expertise are optimally combined. The project will focus on different problem areas, such as climate change, pollution and landmines, where multi-source data can be exploited more efficiently if appropriate computer techniques are developed. Methods and tools for multi-source data exploitation in these areas will be investigated and assessed.

OBJECTIVES
Overall objective:
Investigate methods for efficient extraction and synthesis of environmental information using multi-source data and expert systems, which have the potential for application within a wide range of environmental problems. The methods will be tested and assessed through case studies in different types of environmental problems.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The study of environmental problems will focus on four themes that can benefit from more efficient use of satellite EO data in combination with other available information:
(1) sea ice monitoring in high latitudes,
(2) detection of marine pollution,
(3) identification of agricultural crops, and
(4) landmine clearing.
First, the information requirements versus access to data will be reviewed for each case. Then, algorithms that are applicable to the data will be investigated. Algorithms already implemented by the partners will be extended and further tested, and new algorithms reported in literature will be assessed. It is planned to have one workshop for terrestrial applications and one for marine applications. The workshops will discuss and evaluate generic methodologies for incorporation of single/multiple source data and single/multi-technique methods in an Environmental Information System (EIS). In particular, the use of expert system techniques to optimally select between a set of other analysis techniques for given cases will be assessed. Finally, an approach to building a demonstrator will be developed.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
