MICRO AIR VEHICLES FOR MULTI-PURPOSE REMOTE MONITORING AND SENSING

Obiettivo

The project intends to introduce innovative configurations for MAVs and a 3 year implementation of MOEMS technologies towards the generation of 80 mm devices characterised by:
- multipurpose on board computer for processing and navigation;
- Exploration of neural network for automatic flight control and stabilisation;
- Design and development of foil wired antennas for data communications;
- Experimentation of novel configurations based on the combination of a conventional vertical rotorscrew either with two Horizontal microfans or with oriented microjets;
- Modular approach allowing both high and very low speeds (approaching hover);
- Configurations for a first generation of MAVs with size from 150 mm down to 80 mm; payload up to 20 g; flight altitude up to 200 m; endurance longer than10 minutes; wind speed of 10 m/s; range longer than 500 m; equipped with a video camera , gas and voice noise sensors; that will allow a variety of industrial and societal applications not yet explored. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The project is structured in a three years development. On the first year the consortium will explore and assess system configurations and component technologies. It will start the development of MAV systems flight control technologies and critical components. On the second year the project will conduct design and development of functionally diverse propulsion-actuation systems and will continue the evaluation of operational MAV concepts. On the third year it will initiate the assessment of the propulsion-actuation effectiveness and of the fabrication technologies. It will conduct a MAV system development and fabrication. Continue exploration and demonstration of flight enabling technologies and subsystems. Initiate advanced MAV concept definition.

Marvel consists of eight work-packages (WP):
WP1 System architectures: with the objective to define possible configurations for the MAV;
-WP2 Propulsion and power: where internal combustion engine and electric motors will be provided;
- WP3 Aerodynamic and flight dynamic modelling with the objective to study the aerodynamic and the dynamics of MAVS at very low Reynolds numbers;
- WP4 Onboard avionics autonomous control and visually guided behaviour during which stabilisation and onboard guidance systems will be developed learning from previous insect derived developments;
- WP5 Remote control and data acquisition where miniaturised antennas will be developed;
- WP6 Sensors for remote sensing during which a micro video camera will be adapted to the main airframe and gas and noise-voice sensors will be developed;
- WP7 System integration and on the field tests where the subsystems will be packaged all together and wind tunnel and field trial tests will be performed;
- WP8 Management.
