Obiettivo
This project aims at providing advanced Radio Resource Management (RRM) and Quality of Service (QoS) management solutions, for both UTRA-TDD and UTRA-FDD modes, to support integrated voice and data services. It includes packet access, asymmetrical traffic and high bitrate (2Mbit/s) services for multimedia IP based applications. An intelligent management of the radio resources is essential in order to fulfil the required QoS.
The project will be carried out with the following main stages:
1/ Determination of the target scenarios and services for the technology,
2/ Development and simulation of advanced Radio Resource and QoS Management algorithms,
3/ Validation and demonstration of the algorithms on a developed test-bed in the previously defined scenarios by means of a developed mobile multimedia application, and
4/ Feedback of the results and further tuning of the algorithms.
Objectives:
The main objectives of the project are:
1. to develop, simulate, evaluate and validate advanced Radio Resource Management algorithms and procedures for an optimal and efficient use of the radio resources provided by UTRA to enable high capacity for multiservice applications requiring high bitrate (up to 2Mbit/s). Both TDD and FDD modes will be considered; in case of UTRA-TDD, advantage can be taken of an asymmetrical allocation of the resources (timeslots).
2. to achieve a specific QoS for packet switched services in the UTRA Network through the use and optimisation of QoS Management Functions.
3. to demonstrate the benefits of the developed RRM algorithms by means of a multimedia IP based applications over a testbed.
Work description:
Within the context of Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA), supporting both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) modes, this project aims at providing advanced Radio Resource Management (RRM) and Quality of Service (QoS) management solutions to support integrated voice and data services, including packet access, asymmetrical traffic and high bitrate (2Mbit/s) services for multimedia IP based applications. An intelligent management of the radio resources is essential in order to fulfil the required QoS.
The following work will be done in order to achieve the objectives of the project:
1. Development of two sets of simulators (a set consists of a System and a Multiservice Simulator) for both UTRA-TDD and UTRA-FDD modes, in order to design and evaluate RRM and QoS Management algorithms.
2. Development of algorithms and procedures for traffic control and dynamic bandwidth management, able to efficiently provide packet switched services guaranteeing QoS.
3. Development of a physical layer emulator providing the UMTS physical channels that will be handled by the RRM algorithms, enabling link connectivity for the testbed.
4. Development of a mobile multimedia application using the target services.
5. Development of a real-time operation HW/SW platform including multimedia terminals, UMTS elements and IP connectivity, able to support real-time multimedia calls.
6. Integration of RRM and QoS Management algorithms, multimedia application and HW/SW platform.
7. Contribution to the standardisation and dissemination of the results.
