Environment Consolidated Statistical Tools

Obiettivo

Project ECOSTAT is intended to produce statistical methodologies and tools that will meet the needs of private and public users in the environment field and, in particular, in water quality.
It will engage in research along the most important issues associated with the statistics part of environmental analysis: The use of data mining tools and advanced specialised statistical modelling to identify important relationships, the identification of user needs concerning statistical methodologies and software required for the analysis of environmental issues, the effective statistical data selection process from multi-source data, the elaboration of statistical indicators measuring environmental variables, the creation of a database/inventory of sources, data and metadata in the field of water quality, the development of a specialised software prototype to be used by environmental scientists.

Work description:
Recent years have seen an important focus of policy makers on problems associated with the penetration and beneficial use of the new technologies together with a growing interest for the effective management of the environmental resources. Thus, the emphasis given to the encouragement of making wide use of the emerging technologies has also been matched with an increased interest on the quality of life problems arising from peoples' impact on the environment. Yet, sound policy decisions rely on the availability of a knowledge database, which, in turn, is formed from the information provided by scientific research and experience on these matters.
With this respect, statistics is a significant contributor and it seems that there is a growing demand for environmental statistics and specialised statistical methodologies that can cope with the particular needs of the environmental scientists. Project ECOSTAT is intended to produce statistical methodologies and tools that will fill this gap.

It will engage in research along the most important issues associated with the statistics part of environmental analysis:
1. The data mining techniques and advanced specialised statistical modelling to identify important relationships;
2. The identification of user needs concerning environmental statistical modelling and software required for the analysis of environmental issues;
3. The effective statistical data selection process from multi-source data;
4. The elaboration of statistical indicators measuring environmental variables;
5. The creation of a database/inventory of sources, statistical methods, data and metadata for selected environmental fields;
6. The development of specialised statistical software prototype to be used by environmental scientists. The environmental software will be developed as a user-friendly application software incorporating environmental statistical methodologies developed in this project.

Milestones:
Expected results include:
1. New statistical methodologies applied to environmental issues;
2. Analysis of environmental indicators and their usefulness;
3. Database/inventory of data, sources and metadata for selected environmental fields;
4. Results from research on scientific methods to integrate administrative and survey data;
5. Environmental prototype software;
6. Creation of ECOSTAT Web site;
7. Dissemination and exploitation plan.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
