Switching Technologies for Optically Labeled Signals

Obiettivo

The STOLAS project proposes novel stacked optical labelling techniques enabling optical bypassing of electrical IP routers, in order to improve the throughput of packet-switched IP-over-WDM networks. While the data payload is modulated on the intensity of an optical carrier, the wavelength of the signal is assigned as the first optical label level; the second label level is modulated orthogonally to the data, by DPSK (or FSK) modulating the carrier. Network and node architectures will be compared regarding performance and costs. Also the physical layer behaviour will be analysed. Key optical components and modules will be made: fast modulatable widely tunable optical transmitters, optical stacked-label swapper, label-controlled optical cross connect and add/drop node, and multi-wavelength 2R regenerator. The modules will be integrated in a laboratory testbed and in a field trial jointly with two running IST projects.

OBJECTIVES
The main objective is to improve the throughput of packet-switched networks by novel optical routing techniques based on stacked optical labels; supported by:- to evaluate the network possibilities of optical label switching theoretically- to demonstrate high-speed modulation and fast wavelength switching of widely tunable lasers- to develop multi-channel 2R regenerators in a hybrid technology- to develop optical-label-controlled cross connect and add/drop nodes- to study monitoring and control aspects of optical-label-routed networks- to build a limited network testbed and to validate the key functionalities in a laboratory testbed and in a field trial- to contribute to standardisation processes.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The activities are organised in four workpackages:
- in WP1 System and Network Architecture, the requirements put on a high-throughput data network by operators, users and services are inventoried. Network management and control functions are defined, and traffic flows analysed. Network and node architectures based on stacked-label controlled optical crossconnect and add-drop nodes will be derived to optimise the handling of protocols, and their performance and techno-economic aspects will be analysed. Also the impact of stacked optical labelling on the system transmission characteristics will be investigated;
- in WP2 Optical Components, key optical components for the STOLAS network concept will be created: fast modulatable widely tunable optical transmitters, optical stacked-label swapper, label-controlled optical crossconnect and add/drop node, and multi-wavelength 2R regenerator;
- in WP3 Network Elements, the electrical circuits supporting the optical components from WP2 will be developed. Also the interface with commercial electrical IP routers and a limited network management system will be developed;
- in WP4 System Integration and Trials, the modules from WP2 and WP3 will be integrated into a laboratory testbed. Transmission experiments will be run to assess the stacked optical labelling impact. Finally, the STOLAS system will be put in a limited field trial, in co-operation with two running IST projects; operator and user experiences will be evaluated, and guidelines for future data networks based on optical labelling will be derived.
