Advanced LINUX-Based pRoducts for Embedded telecommunication solutions

Obiettivo

The main objective of the LIBRE project is to integrate and evaluate the open source embedded LINUX Operating System (OS) in the development lifecycle of Embedded Software Products. The project addresses the area of embedded telecommunication applications and will perform a Best Practice Experiment in the scope of a broader project in order to assess the suitable use of LINUX in terms of development effort, reusability, reliability and performance. The LIBRE project will perform a specific experiment which is a part of a larger industrial project, namely the development of an advanced inter-working unit (IWU) between the UMTS UTRAN and the GSM MSC for the migration to 3rd generation mobile communications.

Objectives:
1. To assess the suitability of the LINUX Open Source Embedded OS for time critical applications such as UMTS / RNC-GSM/ MSC inter-working over the E1 / T1 2Mbps interface;
2. To evaluate the efficiency of the embedded LINUX Open Source OS and assess features such as portability, scalability and reusability especially for telecommunications applications;
3. To propose potential changes or enhancements on the embedded LINUX Open Source OS in order to enhance performance and efficiency;
4. To perform a risk analysis on the usage of the LINUX embedded OS, as a platform for the development of networking embedded applications, focussing mainly in the areas of UMTS and GSM networks;
5. Use the sophisticated services of a standard time-shared OS while still permitting real-time functions in a predictable and low-latency environment.

Work description:
The LIBRE project is organised in 6 workpackages.WP1 deals with the management of the project and the smooth execution of the project tasks.WP2 collects the LIBRE experiment requirements regarding real time in the engineering process of reactive systems. Additionally, WP2 will derive the basic criteria for the selection of the embedded LINUX kernel and the specifications for the extensions needed;
Finally WP2 will provide a high level architectural design of the LIBRE best practice experiment;
WP3 will first evaluate and select the most appropriate embedded LINUX kernel that meets the criteria defined in WP2. Additionally, in WP3 the specific evaluation criteria will be defined which will serve as the main way for assessing the project outcome;
WP4 is the work package dealing with the execution of the actual LIBRE experiment. The main phases are the integration of the embedded LINUX kernel in the E1/T1 2Mbps interface, the integration of the higher layer protocol stacks and the overall system integration and testing in a reference laboratory environment;
WP5 is the work package where monitoring information will be collected according to the evaluation criteria defined in WP2. Additionally, a significant task in WP5 is the evaluation of the collected results, which will provide the roadmap for the wider adoption of the embedded LINUX kernel;
Finally, WP6 deals with the internal and external dissemination and technology transfer actions, which will provide the basis for the successful introduction of the new technology to business partners, and relevant industry areas. Additionally, exploitation actions will guarantee the successful continuation of the technology and the resolution of IPR issues arising from the use of open source software.

Milestones:
The main expected result is the successful adoption of the embedded LINUX OS in the area of embedded telecommunication applications, thus further strengthening the products quality and market position. This will be achieved through the following milestones:
T0+4 Detailed Specification of the Experiment;
T0+4 Definition of the Best Practice Project Evaluation method;
T0+9 Mid-term Assessment;
T0+12 Resolution of IPR issues;
T0+17 Finalisation of the Experiment.
