JOint source-channel COding-driven digital baseband design for 4G multimedia streaming

Obiettivo

The main goal of JOCO is to demonstrate the validity of a global network architecture based on Joint Source Channel Coding/Decoding (JSCCD) for demanding communication systems such as the future 4th generation of mobiles (4G). JSCCD is going to be a key for the deployment of 4G networks. A global and systematic approach will be implemented by JOCO including the definition of an appropriate network architecture, the development of the necessary functional blocks and a suitable test bed. The project will also create a strong European IPR position in the new 4G arena, where fierce competition from Japan and US is expected. The project gathers 8 partners from 5 European countries, who are all major players in their domain: two industrial manufacturers of mobile equipments, industrial research laboratories and academics.

Objectives:
1. To demonstrate the validity of a global network architecture based on joint source Channel (de)coding for the future 4G system.
2. To build an integrated global architecture for JSCC/D, introducing the concept of JSCCD controllers.
3. To develop the Network transparency approach.
4. To revisit existing source coding schemes with respect to their ability for JSCC/D and to develop new ones specifically optimised for this purpose.
5. To demonstrate and validate the concepts and the different building blocks in realistic test beds implemented by the industrial partners of the project.
6. To strongly contribute to the advancement of the European IPR position in the emerging field of 4G mobiles.
It is expected that the project could achieve, for the transmission of coded video over wireless channels, a gain of about at least 3dB in terms of PSNR, or alternatively, a doubling of the spectral efficiency.

Work description:
The duration of the project is 36 months (3years) with a total effort of 517man.months.
The main activities of the project are regrouped in 5 work packages WP0-WP5.
WP0 concentrates purely on management of the project and administrative issues.
WP1 addresses the problem of identifying the market requirements in order to develop a fully exploitable system; therefore this work package deals also with the dissemination, exploitation and standardisation issues. Since the field of 4G is new, it is essential at this early stage to build a strong IPR position of Europe and this is one of the key objectives of the project.
WP2 will define the requirements and specifications of the system. The necessary input for the requirements is expected to come from standardisation bodies, market research but also from scientific research. It is necessary to get initially not only input for all modules from source encoder to the source decoder but as well on system aspects, applications and network protocols.
WP3 is the central workpackage of this project which will develop all the necessary blocks for the JSCCD enabled architecture defined in WP2. It will study and design suitable algorithms enabling joint source and channel coding and decoding optimisation of an end-to-end wireless link for the transport of packet multimedia data.

The following topics will be studied:
-source coding schemes enabling JSCC/D optimisation flexible and efficient channel (de)coding and (de)modulation schemes.
-network transparency tools enabling exchange of JSCC/D side information (e.g. SSI, CSI) between application layer and physical layer.
-network-level and bit-level JSCC/D optimisation strategies.
Finally, in WP4 the selected algorithms will be implemented, through progressive steps, in a final demonstrator. The results will be analysed and conclusions and plans for future work and industrial perspectives will be drawn.

Milestones:
1.first system specifications and requirements.
2.intermediate design and performance evaluations of the Joint source/channel coding and decoding studies.
3.first prototyping platform integrating a single Joint source/channel algorithm and a rudimentary user interface.
4.intermediate design and performance evaluations.
5.final end-to-end real time platform.
6.evaluation of the results and definition of action plans for exploitation
