Obiettivo
The objective of this proposal is to explore the technological perspectives and social implications of the Multimedia Home Platform (MHP). From a technical point of view, the resource model of MHP compliant set-top boxes, or personal workstations, limits the design freedom in specific, yet undefined, ways. From a social perspective, the important factor is the consumer. The everyday consumer requires a different approach than, for instance, a typical PC-user. This proposal addresses both the implications from the design spaces, as given by the unique constraints of the MHP, and the implications concerning the interface design under special consideration of the usability aspects.
Work description:
The project can be broken down into two distinct phases. In the first phase, the MHP standard is analysed to identify both the conceptual and the technological levels of the standard. The second phase includes the definition and implementation of a prototype using a sample application. The prototype is tested within an educational and retail consumer environment. One of the main problems with the MHP is the lack of an appropriate interface. During the course of this project, the aim is to define a standard interface framework for applications. As opposed to most current attempts at digital TV interface designs, the project consortium will not orientate itself on the PC-platform. Studies have shown that the greatest market opportunities lie with the users that remain sceptic of PCs and/or the Internet. The main criteria for consumer applications are: an easy to use interface, which is integrated into the existing TV offering; the availability of the application; low prices, which should be based upon the necessary new business models; the external (secure) hosting of personal data. The project aims to develop a universal work platform for a modular consumer application as outlined above. It should be usable in a variety of environments, such as education, biotelemetry, and in combination with new digital premium channels.
Milestones:
Firstly, a description of the current state of the MHP is obtained. The analysis of this data is used to find interface and business models. After the initial phase, a first framework is defined and tested. Further testing is used to refine the framework until a prototype can be launched. Through continued improvements, of both the framework and the prototype, a first application is available to the market. The framework helps in the definition of future application interface design for the MHP.
