Network of Excellence on broadband Fiber Radio Techniques and its Integration Technologies

Obiettivo

The network of excellence NEFERTITI is intended to create an infrastructure with a critical mass of researchers that will gather 21 participants (11 nodes and 10 associate members), all keynote specialists in the domain of Microwave Photonics and from 8 European different countries. This project will allow Europe to attack the dominant position of US and Japan in this domain. It will allow open collaboration with existing regional, national, and international research groups. It addresses broadband analogue and digital communication systems and the contribution from the optical technologies in the domain of microwave / millimeterwave and THz photonics. Strategic goals have been identified; see "objectives". A large number of 15 workshops or seminars, 22 training courses and 3 summer schools are to be organised over the 3 years duration of the project, in the 8 different countries. The partners will also exchange students and skills.

Objectives:
The strategic goals of the network NEFERTITI at the European level are: i) to create an infrastructure that will, for the first time, allow better interaction and collaboration between European specialists with complementary expertise. This will make easier evaluation/comparison of different technologies, ii) to raise awareness of broadband microwave photonic techniques in those microwave industries that have yet to appreciate the potential impact of this relatively new technology, especially for digital and analogue applications. The main R&D strategic goal is also the merging of the two most important technologies of today, i.e. the mobile communication and the optical communication, with both digital and analogue techniques, iii) to enhance technology transfer between partners and exchange skills, iv) to promote microwave photonics in education and training so that Europe is better placed to take advantage of future opportunities and growth in this area.

Work description:
The work is divided into 5 work packages. Goal i) will be accomplished in all WP, Goal ii) in WP1-2-3; Goal iii) in WP 4, Goal iv) in WP 5.
* In WP1, key issues and market requests will be identified at an industrial level: key technological issues (fundamental technologies, critical components, new concepts) for which development is essential to meet market needs, commonalities between the various industrial sectors with an interest in broadband communications: fibre optic communications, defence, sensors and broadcasting.
* WP2 concerns the research and technology transfer aspects between public research laboratories and industries in the consortium. A key goal in microwave photonics technology is the development of new approaches and architectures for broadband communications systems, both analogue and digital. In WP2 are 4 tasks: Task 2.1: Survey of new opto-microwave and millimeterwave component technologies: for example those used for ultrafast modulators, or fast sources. Task 2.2: Comparison of different opto-microwave techniques for parallel/series transmission of very high bit rate signals on microwave subcarriers with / or without multiplexing. Comparison of different techniques of communication and coding. In this part, multi-Gb/s systems topology will be explored. Investigations will include work on WDM Terabit/s systems. Task 2.3: Comparison of techniques for optical processing of microwave analogue signals and digital signals. This includes optical microwave mixing and filtering and the translation of some architectures to phased array antenna applications. Task 2.4: Solutions for ultrawide band photoreceivers, up to the THz range.
* WP3 relates to the dissemination and exploitation of results by means of organisation of workshops and seminars.
* WP4 concerns student exchanges and development of research facilities within the consortium.
* WP5 relates to education and training, courses and summer-courses.

Milestones:
- List of market needs on architecture and functions for achieving broadband communications. List of components and systems realisable to satisfy those needs
- Organisation of workshops and seminars (15 are planned over the 3 years)
- Organisation of training courses for MSc and PhD students (22 are planned over the 3 years)
- Organisation of 3 summer-schools, in Germany, U.K. and Spain.
