ALGORITHMS FOR THE MODELLING OF ACOUSTIC INTERACTIONS

Obiettivo

The ALMA project will develop an elegant, general and unifying strategy for a block-wise design of non-linear physical and pseudo-physical models in sound synthesis. The strategy that will be developed will follow a "divide-and-conquer" approach, in which the elements of the structure are individually modelled and discretised, while their interaction topology is separately implemented in a dynamical and "physically sound" fashion. This novel methodology will be used for the development of a new generation of object-oriented physical/pseudo-physical sound synthesis solutions. In order to prove the effectiveness of the proposed solutions, the project will focus on the application scenario of the virtual musical instruments, and will be demonstrated on complex cases of object-based acoustic interactions. The results, however, will be general enough to enable the modelling and the implementation of a new class of multi-modal object-based virtual environments.

OBJECTIVES
The ALMA project intends to develop an elegant, effective sound synthesis solution of practical usability, which will serve as a scientific and technological basis for a wide range of modelling applications. The strategy will be based on the individual modelling of functional blocks (objects), which will interact with each other through a "topology network", specifically designed to:
- comply with a set of global consistency constraints (e.g. elementary laws of dynamics, Kirchhoff laws, energy preservation);
- solve for all potential computational problems that arise from connecting together individually discretised objects (closed loops with no delay elements);
- guarantee that the implementation will not affect the model's stability, by making the interaction topology inherently non-energetic. The object-oriented physical modelling methodologies that will be developed by the ALMA project will be suitable for the signification of the interaction between elements of a musical instrument or, ultimately, between objects of a virtual environment.

The system will enable a seamless interaction between a wide variety of blocks, ranging from models described by dual pairs (extensive/intensive) of physical signals (e.g. pressure/flow or force/velocity); to scattering models, described by pairs of digital waves. This novel unifying theory will allow us to generalise global consistency constraints such as the preservation of pseudo-energy and laws of dynamics, and will open the way to object-based synthesis with stable and consistent interaction topologies.

Mathematical tools that will be generalised, integrated and used are:
- non-linear extended wave digital structures;
- digital wave guides;
- combined domain transforms (Laplace/Sturm-Louville).

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The project activity will last 36 months and will be organised in 6 work packages (WP). Project coordination, within WP1, will be carried out in synergy and concentration with other projects working in similar research areas within and outside the IST program. WP1 will also focus on system specifications and assess the problem of the integration of all software modules within a common flexible environment. The scientific work package WP2 will focus on the development of a unifying synthesis approach that will integrate and generalise the available synthesis solutions of interest. The technical-scientific work packages WP3 and WP4 will develop the essential technology needed for a flexible object-based sound synthesis through generalised physical modelling. In particular, WP3 will deal with the modelling of physical/pseudo-physical building blocks (objects); activities in WP4 will be focused on the construction of the interaction topology that will allow the acoustic building blocks to interact with each other to generate sounds. WP5 will be devoted to the specification and the implementation of novel human-model interaction schemes that will exploit at best the new techniques brought forth by the ALMA project. Besides exploring traditional interaction solutions, this WP will develop novel interaction schemes that take advantage of all the potentialities of virtual reality. All these technical WP's will guarantee full compliance with the specifications defined in WP1. Finally, WP6 will include all the activities related to the organisation of intermediate and final demonstrations in the application scenarios of the "virtual lutist" and of the sonification of object interactions in virtual environments.
