Obiettivo
This proposal is aimed at further stimulation of the take-up of MST in Industry, and will target those sectors difficult to infiltrate, initially in the medical sector using non silicon based products. The EC community spends a considerable amount on health, and yet whilst this is clearly a sector that would benefit greatly from MST there are very few new products available. Within this consortium the focus is on the concept through to prototype.
The partners recognise that in order to develop complete microsystems it is essential that customers can be taken through all the stages that occur in any product realisation cycle, namely:
Concept;
Feasibility Study;
Design;
Prototype;
Test;
Manufacture.
Thus the overall project objective is to increase the competitiveness of European Industry through the use of Microsystem technology (MST). The focus will be on companies wishing to integrate MST into their products as a complete system.
Objectives:
The overall project objective is to increase the competitiveness of European Industry through the use of Microsystem Technology (MST):
i) Target the markets where non Silicon based MST products could be used but currently the take-up is very low;
ii) Produce and use examples of the complete product life cycle, and form the required partnerships to generate total system solutions for the customer;
iii) Define and publicise the design concepts, and technical and commercial expertise on offer from the consortium;
iv) Clearly specify the types of products, the benefits and the product development cycle for the generic technologies on offer;
v) Specify the Intellectual Property on offer, and how this can be developed for different customer applications;
vi) Generate further Proof of Concepts. Use these as the starting point for new system developments;
vii) Introduce at least 2 NAS design companies into the MST environment in Europe
Work description:
The programme of work to be undertaken by this design consortium will be looking at helping customers produce total systems, in market sectors so far not exposed to MST. Primarily, non Silicon based systems will be offered, using building blocks e.g. Proof of Concepts, developed by the Partners. In order to achieve this, knowledge and expertise is also required in areas other than MST. It is not sufficient to have expertise in producing micro-structures, micro-sensors, or micro-actuators. To produce total system solutions for markets like the medical sector, it is essential that assembly, packaging, reliability, life time, bio-compatibility and approvals are all addressed from the outset. The partners in this consortium, have developed this expertise in MST Design by building partnerships with hospitals, clinicians, packaging experts and companies familiar with the procedures of Approval bodies. These partnerships will be extended and used to help develop new systems, to ultimately produce new MST products on the market. Each partner will prepare their own Business Plan, defining their products, markets, partners and marketing strategy. Proof of concepts developed in MST Design will be defined and prepared into flyers for publicity purposes. Each partner will acquire their own customers using the methods defined. An operational framework for selected NAS participants to contribute technically and commercially to MST Systems will be set up, including servicing customers from NAS countries. In order to achieve this the design partner needs to understand exactly the customer's requirements, and what skills and expertise is required in order to achieve this. These may be pieces of hardware, showing how sub components can be made, or theoretical studies showing how a technology can be applied to a MST product, where existing systems are on the macro scale.
Milestones:
The expected results will be to enhance the take up of non-silicon MST products by companies in Europe. Have a comprehensive web site for all interested parties to discover the capabilities of MST. Find 2 NAS partners to further enhance the use of MST Systems in these countries. Through out the programme have a minimum of 40 contracts awarded with 10 having proof of concepts. This will make the companies understand the MST design/business requirements of Proof of concept, Feasibility Study; Design; Prototype; Test; Manufacture, which are all essential for successful MST take up.
