Obiettivo
This project researches advanced reasoning capabilities to achieve powerful information integration. A theory and techniques for future information integration systems will be developed to handle semi-structured data in high-level, declarative interaction with the user. Computational logic provides promising techniques for reaching this goal, but scalability of the approach requires developing new optimisation techniques to enable efficient manipulation of large amounts of data. OBJECTIVES
The principal objective is to obtain an advanced system for information integration which is innovative in providing:
- comprehensive information modelling;
- advanced reasoning capabilities;
- handling of semi-structured data;
- declarative user-interaction;
- handling of incomplete and inconsistent data sources.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Information integration has the task of providing a uniform interface to various pre-existing data sources so as to enable users to focus on specifying what they want rather than thinking of how to obtain the answer. As a result, an information integration system frees users from the tasks of finding the relevant data sources, interacting with each source in isolation, and selecting, cleaning, and combining data from multiple sources. The project aims to provide a solid theory and innovative methodologies for future flexible information integration systems. In particular, advanced reasoning capabilities by means of computational logic, handling of semi-structured data, declarative user interaction, possibilities of dealing with complete and inconsistent data sources, extendibility and scalability are important and yet open issues which will be tackled and resolved in this project. In addition, a prototype system will be developed in order to assess the validity and usability of the approach.
The desideratum of scalability is particularly challenging and carries a high risk since comparable techniques are currently insufficient in this respect. Though this challenge may be hard to meet, if successful it will bring major benefits. Not only will companies and other types of organisation be able to integrate their internal data efficiently and competently, also inter-organisational and large-scale distributed information systems will become feasible.
