Portable Optical Spectrum Analyzer for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) Systems

Obiettivo

The purpose of the POSA DWDM project is to develop a new, portable optical spectrum analyzer (POSA), suitable for both field and laboratory conditions for the task of maintaining and trouble-shooting DWDM system's components and networks. The instrument will have specifically designed inputs in order to match the dynamic range of the best optical spectrum analyzers available in the world today. The instrument will also have a higher spectral resolution than any existing portable optical spectrum analyzer and the device will be extremely rugged and compact due to its new and unique optical design. Specially designed software will considerably reduce the number of sampling points required and overall measurement time in addition to improvements concerning data transmission and storage. In addition the instrument will be designed to use low cost high bit-rate fast analogue-to-digital converters.

Work description:
The work required to achieve the project objectives is divided into 9 technical workpackages and two other workpackages concerning dissemination, implementation and the overall management of the project:
- The heart of the POSA is a unique double-beam high-resolution interferometer. To meet the state of the art requirements concerning spectral resolution of DWDM channels 9 25 GHz) and less the optical path difference of the interferometer is to be 11 cm, enabling POSA to achieve a spectral resolution of just 2 GHz. The inter-ferometer is to be very compact to allow complete portability;
- The high-resolution interferometer also requires a high dynamic range. In the case of classical Michelson interferometers the dynamic range is somewhat limited, due mainly to the intensity of the maximum centre burst of the interferogram. A new, double-beam interferometer will be developed to achieve a dynamic range as high as diffraction grating spectrometers;
- Optical tolerance analysis of the double-beam interferometer will determine the allowed tolerances of all optical components used in the interferometer in order to achieve the required resolution;
-The device is planned to be a modular portable instrument consisting of an optical module and a data acquisition and display module (DAQ&D). The last module will allow the operator to quickly modify test requirements and in addition will be designed to resist the rigors of bad field conditions, provide long term stability and allow networking to other devices;
- A high resolution interferometer requires high-bit rate fast data streams. Development of the electronic board for handling a very large amount of high-bit rate data during a short time period will also be developed. Sampling of the interferogram at equal intervals of optical path length determines the number of sampling points required. Sampling of the interferogram is in fact multiplying the interferogram with a row of Delta functions. To reduce the number of required sampling points a new, programmable sampling technique will be developed. Programmable sampling requires the development of software algorithms that will enable unevenly or randomly spaced sampling techniques to be used;
-Validation and test of the POSA is the final work package. Wave length accuracy, spectral resolution, power uncertainty, dynamic range, and signal-to-noise ratios will be measured.

Milestones:
Milestones consist of subassemblies or modules of the POSA system as well as new software. There will be seven modules: high-resolution double-beam interferometer, main electronics to the interferometer, optical interface between POSA and DWDM system, data acquisition and display module, interferogram data "casual" sampling software, optical tolerance analysis of the interferometer, POSA system. Besides that there will be a workshop and reports about the progress and final results of the project.
