Optical Fibre Sensors For Small Office Home Office

Obiettivo

The main objective of this project (study) is to evaluate the feasibility of adapting existing fibre optic sensor technology for the monitoring of residential and small office home office (SOHO) buildings structural integrity. The evaluation shall take into account the four aspects which take part in building monitoring from a technical and cost point of view, which are:
a) the optical fibre sensors based on fibre Bragg gratings,
b) the fibre sensors interrogation equipment,
c) the buildings architectural constraints and
d) the interrogation system architecture.

The main project output will be a final report, a measurement system prototype, which will act as project demonstrator, and two system enablers: a Bragg grating array, as a set of low cost strain sensors, and a special purpose tuneable source.

Objectives:
To evaluate the feasibility of adapting existing fibre optic sensor technology for the monitoring of residential and small office home office (SOHO) buildings structural integrity. It can be broken down into:

1) To define the monitoring system, i.e. system architecture and parameters.
2) To define the architectural feasibility and guidelines, for both new and renovated buildings.
3) To develop a special purpose Bragg grating array, as low cost set of strainsensors. Probable Main Specs (PMS): 8 sensors per array, 50-100 GHz spacing, 50-100 GHz tuning.
4) To develop a customized tuneable laser source, as low cost sensors interrogation equipment (PMS: 2 GHz step tuning, +/-2 GHz accuracy, covering C band).

Work description:
a) Planning and cost studies.
It will involve three activities: defining the system, performing cost studies and integrating project results. The definition will describe the optical fibre sensor system as a whole and its architectural guidelines and constraints (for both new constructions and rebuilds), it will specify the Bragg gratings sensors and tuneable laser source main parameters, the fibre network architecture and the measurement system. The cost analysis will take the form of a case study and endeavour to identify the system cost per building for a chosen building size. The analysis will also identify items which are capable of cost reduction either through technology development or mass deployment.

b) Development of Bragg grating array.
The purpose of this activity is to design and fabricate a customized Bragg grating array to show the capabilities of these devices as multisensor elements in a building unit. The purpose of fabrication under array form is to lower the individual sensor price by reducing manufacturing stages. The individual gratings centre wavelengths will be as close as possible (perhaps down to 50 GHz), to maximize the number of sensors which can be connected to one single network.

c) Tailoring to the system needs of tuneable optical source.
The inherent high power spectral density of its optical output allows one same source to be shared by several parallel arrays, thus lowering the system cost per individual sensor. The source shall be an improvement of a former one already developed by the partner in charge of the action.

d) Setting up of measurement system, which will test the tuneable laser source, Bragg grating array and measurement concept. It will be initially calibrated using commercially available Bragg grating strain sensors.

Milestones:
The most important results and milestones of the project will be:
1) White paper for fibre sensors in residential buildings
2) Bragg grating array, as multisensor element
3) Tuneable laser source, as sensor interrogation equipment
4) Demonstration of system concept in a laboratory measurement set up.
