The project will develop an interpretation of OMG's Model Driven Architecture - a novel and promising component architecture - specific to telecommunications systems to enable the integrative usage of emerging modelling and system integration techniques in telecommunications. The results will enable the usage of advances in component architectures to cope with the complexities in modern telecommunications system development and operation. The project will develop solutions and tools to explore the applicability of advanced component architectures in the telecommunication domain, and will influence the standardisation at the OMG where appropriate.
Objectives:
MODA-TEL is a joint effort of European stakeholders with business interest in component architectures, to develop a sound methodology and tools to support the application of model driven architectures (MDA) in the telecommunication domain, addressing:-Assessment of the foundation of MDA-Development of a methodology to support the application of MDA-Development of tools to support MDA-based software development-Verify MDA by application to use cases-Influence the OMG standardisation in view of telecom requirements-Advance the MDA technology by doing research in QoS awareness, model transformations, business modelling and UML improvements
Work description:
MODA-TEL will develop technology that allows organisations to more efficiently model, construct, integrate, deploy, manage, operate and evolve software in telecommunications systems. This will be achieved be providing clear guidelines, methodologies and tools for the application of model driven architecture (MDA) principles in telecommunications information management and telecommunication component based software construction.
The primary targets are:
- The guidelines and methodology for the application of MDA in telecommunications;
- The development of tools for supporting the application of MDA;
- The feedback and influence of the OMG and other standards bodies with respect to the further evolution of MDA;
- The identification and potentially the provision of solutions for technology areas that are currently not sufficiently addressed in the MDA.
The project will assess the foundations of MDA, identify the key technologies and assess the available MDA tools in the context of the telecommunication domain. It then will develop a methodology and guidelines for the application of MDA technologies and specify formalisation principles for model transformation techniques. Based on the gained insight an architecture for an MDA toolset will be defined and available tools will be extended according to telecommunication specific requirements. Finally the MDA-capable tools will be used to support the application of MDA onto selected use cases that are suitable for challenging the MDA approach. Necessary research will accompany the work and will provide solution proposals for areas not sufficiently addressed by the current state in MDA standardisation at OMG.
Milestones:
- Definition, Methodology and Guidelines to apply the Model Driven Architecture;
- Methodology, Concepts, Notations, Platform Specification and Transformation Rules;
- Selection of MDA;
- Challenging use cases and application of MDA onto these use cases;
-Architecture and prototype of an MDA-supporting toolset;
- Research and proposed solutions for MDA support in the areas QoS awareness, business modelling, model transformation tools;
- Influence of MDA standardisation at the OMG.
