Strategic Roadmap for Crypto

Obiettivo

European research and industry has obtained many remarkable achievements in cryptology, but groups of experts are fragrnented, and academic research is not generally driven by industry's needs. STORK aims to provide a strategic roadmap for cryptology by:
-identifying all the major European stakeholders in cryptologic research and applications, in both academia and industry, and the areas of existing or required research;
-bringing together key players in each area to formulate a common research agenda to meet current and future needs for cryptology;
-publishing and disseminating documents identifying significant topics for future research, and important open problems in cryptology;
-laying the groundwork for a Network of Excellence in Cryptology, under FP6. OBJECTIVES
This project falls under Strategic Roadmaps for Applied Research and aims:
-To identify all major European stakeholders in cryptologic research and applications.
-To identify the gaps between the state of the art in cryptologic research and current and forthcoming requirements for cryptographic algorithms and techniques.
-Hence, to develop a shared agenda for research in cryptology.
-To lay the groundwork for a Network of Excellence in Cryptology, under FP6, to pursue and maintain the research agenda. This network will be the core of European research in the domain, and will improve communication and collaboration between cryptologic researchers, industrial bodies driving requirement

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
European research and industry has obtained many remarkable achievements in cryptology, but it suffers from fragmentation. STORK aims at providing a platform for interchanging ideas and formulating a common research agenda. The project is planned to last from September 2002 till the end of November 2003. It is divided in three workpackages, plus one for management and administration.
-WP1 : Status of European competences in cryptology. This WP will make an inventory of all European groups doing research or applications in cryptology, either academic groups or industries. The detailed areas of research will be enumerated, and the key and emerging players in each area identified.
-WP2 : New trends in cryptology. This WP will produce a public document identifying the important problems faced by cryptographers and users of cryptology, either currently or in the short or medium term future. A workshop will be the major event of this WP, with invited speakers from major players in cryptology and related domains. Major personalities from industry and universities will be asked to propose problems rather than results. This will stimulate a brainstorm between cryptographers and a list of the most important problems will be isolated.
-WP3 : Establishment of Network of European cryptologists. This WP will establish structures to assure that the findings from WPl and WP2 will appropriately influence EU academia and industry. The first task is to generate an agenda of significant topics for future research. A second document will contain a more specific list of open problems in cryptology, which are of theoretical and practical importance. Two permanent European committees will then be formed from the key players identified in WP1. These committees will maintain the research agenda, review progress towards solutions and liaise with research bodies.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
