Development Of A Non-invasive Blood Glucose Level Monitoring Technology For Diabetes And Clinical Applications

Obiettivo

Objectives:
To develop a non-invasive, accurate, continuous blood glucose level monitoring device based on combined magnetic and optical sensors. In so doing, preventing 12272 annual diabetes related deaths and long-term complications in more than 9000 diabetics. The proposed technology will contribute to the implementation of the St. Vincent Declaration by preventing long-term complications. It will save EC more than EUR 7.23 billon per annum in the cost of health care by reducing kidney damage by 5-9 % and damage to the eyes by 11% amongst the 35 million diabetics in Europe. The proposed technology will also reduce 750,000 tonnes of bio-hazardous steel wastes from the elimination of steel lancets.
The proposed technology will generate sales revenue of EUR 228.5 million and create a total of 1523 job opportunities by offering a painless accurate and cost effective technology that transcends the state of the art of the US imports. The project supports IST-2001 I.1- "Intelligent environment for citizen centred health managment" by providing diabetic patients with intelligence to effectively manage their health by the use of portable secure systems.

Work description:
Main Innovations & features of concept products are:
- Development of an intense magnetic field in the range across the blood vessel by the novel use of rare earth magnet in a selectively shielded configuration.
-Development of a novel magnetic field shielding mechanism to divert the magnetic field through itself to refocus (and amplify) the intentisity of the magnetic field. This shielding will also serve to protect the environment and the electronic module by the containment of the field to the required part of the device;
- Development of a high sensitivity and highly specialised magnetic sensor capable of generating signal based on the level of magnetic susceptibility of materials present in the body;
- Development of an innovative dedicated and integrated control and spectral analysis software for optical and magnetic sensing to control the device and analyse the outputs from the magnetic and optical sensors.

The Research Approach is:
Scientific characterisation of the magnetic susceptibility of body analytes and the intense magnetic field trials to quantity the magnetic susceptibility of body analytes with trials on the optimised method of optical detection of blood analytes Development of high sensitivity magnetic and optical sensor head to ensure a high resolution of the analyte signature Development of User Information Software to interpret the sensed glucose signatures into a digital display System Intergration and User Ergonomics will package the developed technology into a suitable prototype that fits in with lifestyle of typical diabetes and initiatives pre-clinical validation trials.

Milestones:
Mth 6-Quantified magnetic signature of body analytes, optimised shaped magnet configuration and concept, lifestyle design;
Mth 12-High sensitivity Hall effect sensor and an integrated shielded magnetic field generator;
Mth 12- User information Software and sensor algorithm;
Mth 24 - Validated integrated wrist worn prototype sensor;
Mth 24 - Initiation of Pre-clinical trials/Project Management and Co-ordination.
