Collaborative Development of Tools and Dies in SMEs networks

Obiettivo

For tool and die makers the most important competitive factors are time, cost and quality; the last ISTMA Annual Report highlighted some of the handicaps for the European tool and die industry competitiveness:
-Continuous pressure to reduce time to market
- Strong pressure on prices and high personal costs
-Growing difficulty in finding skilled workers
-The same report concludes with two basic recommendations for the strategic orientation of the companies in this sector:
-Realise, even for smaller companies in the sector, that they are operating in the global market and should be ready to follow the needs of the customers. This will require them to reach some agreements with competitive companies in order to answer those needs efficiently and in time
-Take advantage of the Internet, still considered a risk by some of these companies but which is really a great opportunity for the small and medium-sized enterprises

CDie, has as main objective, the development and support of collaborative engineering groups that could belong to the same or different companies working together in the development of tools and dies. To do this effective, it will be necessary to:
-define an organisational model and efficient business collaboration strategies in tool and die industry,
-define a shareable tool and die engineering information model,
-develop the required software infrastructure to provide a common view of the project under development and share project-related information with everyone involved on it, and
-support the workgroup interoperation including change analysis and its management in that distributed scenario.
One of the principal requirements for the adopted solution is that must be easy to install and to use and flexible to incorporate new companies in the co-operation network created around a specific tool and die project. OBJECTIVES
CDie has as main objective, the development and support of collaborative engineering groups that could belong to the same or different companies working together in the development of tools and dies. To do this effective, it will be necessary to:
-define an organisational model and efficient business collaboration strategies in tool and die industry,
-define a shareable tool and die engineering information model,
-provide a common view of the project under development and sharing the project-related information, and
-develop the required software infrastructure for workgroup interoperation including change analysis and its management in that scenario.
-The adopted solution, that will be easy to install and use, will be also tested in a public site in Internet as an ASP (Application Service Provider).

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Research will be centred on the definition of two basic models:
-Tool and die engineering model that must consider different types of information as: That generated by engineering applications, structured data in a database and less structured data as catalogues, digital documents, check lists, etc. Most of them will be project information: part geometry, process plan, simulations, assembly drawings, etc. Also horizontal information will be relevant: Rules to be applied, international regulations, process related work instructions, etc.
-Workgroup collaboration model for the description, in a distributed context, of the process by which the tool and die making takes place. The collaboration model need to express the project structure, work to be done by the external companies, input data for them, the expected results, times and costs. This model must be able to represent the current state of the design process and, make possible the analysis of the consequences, i.e. in costs, of the introduction of some change. Finally, manage and synchronise the change in the co-operation network.
-One relevant part of this investigation will be the consideration of the work organisation methods and the adopted network topology to support this collaborative work.
-In the software implementation side, the aim of project is the adaptation of a generic CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) system to the specific requirements coming from the tool and die making industry to create the Tool and Die Workspace. For the network interoperation a Shared Workspace will be used as the common area where project participants interchange relevant project information.
-The software implementation will be complemented with interfacing methods with engineering applications -some relevant CAD/CAM application- and the integration of synchronous communication mechanisms for application sharing and co-operative visualization of geometry.
