Magneto-Optical Recording International Symposium

Obiettivo

Grant application for Magneto-Optical Recording International Symposium, taking place at Benodet (France) on 5-8 May 2002

Objectives:
The Conference MORIS - Magneto Optical Recording International Symposium - has for subject the research and the development on magneto-optical, magneto and optical data storage systems. Its aim is to provide a discussion forum on latest developments in magneto-optical data storage between industrial and fundamental research on an international scale. Previous MORIS Conferences have shown that both industrial participation from the major companies and basic research on information storage have been equally represented, providing for an active exchange on latest technology and related science. The Scientific programme will include two Key note lectures, two tutorials, a panel session on new concepts in magneto-optical recording and talks on topics of materials, domain physics and dynamics, MSR, MAMMOS, DWDD, near field and scanning probe recording, measurement and testing, combined optical and MO technologies, MO devices, substrates, mastering and future technologies.

Work description:
The laboratory of Magnetism and Optics is a research unit of the CNRS. The research theme of the LMOV is centred on the "Physics of magnetic and optical phenomena of materials for data storage and information handling". The laboratory is composed of four groups working on the following subjects:
1. Magnetism of nano-particles: Dynamic and static properties of ferromagnetic nano-particles are studied experimentally and theoretically to investigate surface magnetism and corresponding fluctuations;
2. Molecular magnetism: inorganic spin-conversion materials and organic iron complex molecule are studied for the intrinsic bistability properties. These materials present photo-induced magnetism, which can be controlled by external parameters (pressure, temperature, magnetic field etc.). The activity is subject to a European contract TMR: thermal and optical switching of spin states (TOSS);
3. Non-linear optics of cermets: Exaltation of non-linear optics properties is studied on small metallic inclusions in dielectric host optics of cermets: Exaltation of non-linear optical properties is studied on small metallic inclusions in dielectric host materials. This non linear exaltation of surface plasmons is studied by second harmonic generation surface near filed optical microscopy and surface enhanced Raman scattering;
4. Magnetic thin films and multilayers: Magnetic oxide thin films and heterostructures produced by pulsed laser deposition are studied for the magnetic, optical and magneto-optical properties. In particular low dimensional magnetism and exchange coupling are investigated intensively. This research has been supported by a Marie-Curie fellowship on "Preparation and study of magnetic oxide bi- and multilayer systems for magneto-optical data storage applications".
