Objectives
The aim of the IMAGE project is to overcome some of the barriers to the implementation of advanced glazing systems in Europe: lack of information on advanced window systems behaviour within time varying environments in and around buildings and on durability and optical characteristics; need for standard routes for fully characterising practical performances, especially for managed systems and 'super-windows'; lack of integrated performance assessment tools for glazing manufacturers to assess the overall performance of advanced glazing/framing systems, and limited knowledge on how to incorporate advanced glazing systems within existing buildings where their potential is greatest.
Technical Approach
The first task will establish a standard testing procedure suitable for the evaluation of advanced glazing systems under both steady state and dynamic conditions drawing on current CEN and EN standards as well as those established for component testing within the PASSYS project. Glazing systems will be examined and components tested, including multi-glazed systems with advanced features, improved frame systems, managed systems and 'super-window systems'.
Design integration studies will be carried out with building industry professionals investigating advanced glazing options for real design projects.
A rational procedure for the estimation of uncertainty in building performance will be developped within a program independent method for the integrated performance appraisal of advanced glazing systems when associated with particular building design and climatic contexts, taking into account the potential energy savings, comfort, environmental benefits, durability and cost effectiveness.
An advanced appraisal tool will be constructed from the ESP-r and RADIANCE programs operating cooperatively.
Expected Achievements and Exploitation
A standard test procedure for the evaluation of the performance of advanced glazing systems when placed in steady state and dynamically varying environments.
Industry-relevant performance data based on experiments conducted within the (upgraded) PASSYS test cells and partner laboratories.
Real scale design studies involving leading architects from across the EU and thereby fostering the dissemination of advanced glazing technologies and know-how to key building industry decision makers.
A computer-based glazing performance assessment method which takes account of data uncertainty and product durability.
An advanced appraisal tool based on existing thermal (ESP-r) and daylighting (Radiance) programs.
A marketplace study of advanced glazing systems in commercial applications.
