Objectives
Future legislation will impose severe limitations in the allowed level of sulphur in gasolines. Since nearly 90% of the gasoline sulphur comes from the FCC gasoline stream, the only realistic way for reducing sulphur in the gasoline pool is to reduce it in this stream. However, with the existing hydrodesulphurization technology, this reduction in sulphur implies such a large reduction in the octane value of the fuel, that makes this process impractical.
The present project proposes the development of a new catalytic system able to desulphurize the FCC gasoline to a level of approximately 150 ppm without producing any significant reduction of its octane value. In this way, it will be possible to decrease the sulphur level in the gasoline pool to the expected future specifications of around 50 to 100 ppm, while maintaining the combustion characteristics of the fuel, producing an important improvement with respect to the current state of the art. The success in carrying out this project will allow the economical reduction of the sulphur level in gasolines to approximately a tenth of its actual value, and will significantly reduce the emissions from automobile sources to the atmosphere, particularly sulphur compounds, HC, CO, and NOx. Hence, an important contribution to the protection of the environment will be made. Finally, this new catalytic technology will secure the future availability of low sulphur-high octane gasoline.
Technical Approach
In order to obtain this objective we will operate as follows: 1. Preparation of catalysts with maximized hydrodesulphurization versus hydrogenation selectivity. The high selectivity will be obtained increasing the desulphurization activity of the catalyst. The use of non-conventional preparation methods (coprecipitation, sol-gel routes, and impregnation with heteropolycompounds) will allow us to obtain the catalysts with the enhanced HDS activity.
2. Introduction of an acidic function in the catalyst in order to compensate for the octane loss due to olefin saturation, with certain extent of multibranching isomerization of the feed. It is well established that isomerization is one of the least costly ways of producing octane barrels.
3. Optimization of the catalyst preparation method and evaluation up to the pilot plant scale.
Expected Achievements and Exploitation
The development of a new technology for reduction of the sulfur level in gasoline will be the main achievement of this programme.
The Consortium formed posseses the technology and the necessary comertial potential to exploit the resulting catalysts, given that the new products will fall within the scope of activities of the companies involved.
