TO DEVELOP METHODS OF COMBATING THE PATHOGENIC BASIDIOMYCETE FOMES ANNOSUS.
IT IS PROPOSED TO ESTABLISH THE PART PLAYED BY THE MYCOTOXIN(S) PRODUCED BY THE FUNGUS AND TO EXAMINE THE BEHAVIOUR IN THE HOST CELL. RADIO-LABELLED AND 13C-LABELLED PRECURSORS WILL BE SYNTHESISED FOR THE BIOSYNTHETIC STUDIES (IN DUBLIN) AND CELL TISSUE STUDIES (IN GERMANY). THE LONG TERM RESULT OF THIS STUDY SHOULD LEAD TO THE PRODUCTION OF RESISTANT CONIFER SPECIES.
THE INTRODUCTION OF MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI AS A PROTECTANT WILL BE INVESTIGATED AND THE STRUCTURES OF THE ANTIBIOTICS PRODUCED BY OIDIODENDRON SPECIES WILL BE SOUGHT.
AS AN INTERIM MEASURE FOR THE CONTROL OF THE DISEASE, A PROPHYLATIC TREATMENT FOR FRESHLY CUT STUMPS OF SPRUCE USING A BIOLOGICAL/CHEMICAL PROCEDURES WILL BE FIELD TESTED. THE ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE CHEMICAL FUNGICIDE IS BASED ON THE STRUCTURE OF THE NORMAL DEFENCE AGENT OF SPRUCE.
