Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are on the verge to become a universal tool for scientific ocean exploration and industrial underwater applications. The EURODOCKER project concentrates on the development of a universal autonomous Docking-Downloading-Recharging (DDLR) system for AUVs to overcome the current restrictions to the use of unmanned platforms and autonomous vehicles. The technologies and devices that shall be developed within this project will easily allow a subsequent exploitation of the project's outcome and provide the means to enter the world-wide market of commercial submodules for unmanned underwater vehicles with an advanced European product. The objective of the EURODOCKER project is to :1) Study the requirements of underwater support to AUVs, relevant to reenergizing ( not limited to batteries recharging) and data transfer (survey downloading, reprogramming etc) 2) Identify and design (near and long term) both a ship-supported and an autonomous DDLR (Docking-Downloading-Recharging) system, suited to the wide set of AUVs now under successful development, to become a standard subsystem of the AUV support spread.3) Manufacture and test prototype components of both sides of the EURODOCKER DDLR system(on AUV and underwater platform) 4) Integrate and test in shallow water a prototype of the system identified for near term AUVs (based on electric batteries) by the use of an existing state of the art AUV, recently developed under the MAST II programme.
