Scour Around Coastal Structures

Obiettivo

The objectives of the project are:
1. To study the potential risk for scour around coastal structures; and
2. To investigate different kinds of protection measures against the scour, and establish design guidelines for the scour protection.
To achieve these objectives, three work packages are contemplated, namely
Task 1. Scour;
Task 2. Measures against the scour; and
Task 3. Data management.
The first work package, Task 1, is organized in three sub-tasks: The first sub-task will concentrate on the processes, namely the flow processes (such as the horseshoe vortex, vortex shedding, the wave-induced streaming, etc.) and the resulting scour processes. These will be studied to get a profound understanding of the physical processes involved. The second subtask will concentrate on the sediment behaviour close to the structure with due consideration to wave-generated pore pressures and the resulting liquefaction (momentary or otherwise). The latter will be measured in the field concurrently with the scour. The third sub-task will be concerned with the modelling of flow and scour. 2-D and 3-D numerical models will be used.
The knowledge gained in the prior stage will be incorporated in the model development. The data obtained in the laboratory and field experiments will be used to validate the models.
Almost the entire range of coastal structures will be considered in Task 1: heads of groins, detached and shore attached breakwaters, submerged breakwaters, main breakwater of an harbour, vertical cylinders (slender cylinders like piles, and large cylinders), group of piles.
Task 2, "Measures against the scour", is also organized in three sub-tasks. In the first subtask, attention will be concentrated on filters, one of the elements of protection measures. Design criteria for filters will be developed for unsteady flows (waves and current). Furthermore, penetration of blocks into the bed in the absence of filters will be investigated. The second sub-task will be concerned with the plan view extensions of the bed protection. The latter will be worked out for the same structures as those mentioned in the preceding paragraph. The third sub-task will concentrate on the behaviour at the edge of the protection layer, the location which is exposed to severe flow actions. Special attention will be paid to the issues such as the stability of blocks at the protection edge; and flexible and nonflexible protection edges.
Task 3, "Data management", comprises three elements: the data collection, the quality checking of the data, and the data banking. The task is organized in two sub-tasks. The first sub-task will be concerned with the collection of the data and the quality checking of them, both in the laboratory and in the field. The second sub-task will deal with the banking of the data. Utmost care will be taken to ensure that the data serve the needs of the participating scientists. The data banking will be achieved on electronic media (Internet, FTP, FTP via email, diskettes, video,..), supplemented by publishing in the conventional way wherever necessary.
The technical deliverables at the end of the project will include software programmes, inventories of the banked data. design guidelines, and an exploitation and dissemination report.
