An instrument for the measurement of the thermal conductivity of high temperature melts

Ziel

The thermal conductivity of molten materials at very high temperature is of considerable technological significance in a wide range of industries, specially in the metallurgical sector, in the semiconductor industry and the glass manufacturing. In each of these industries the quality of the product is determined by the process of heat transfer accompanying solidification. Current instrumentation to measure the thermal conductivity of high temperature melts, however, do not provide definitive means to determine these quantities with an accuracy which is commensurate with industrial needs.

The aim of the project is to develop a prototype instrument based on the transient hot-strip method for the measurement of the thermal conductivity of high temperature melts with an accuracy of better than 2% in the range from room temperature up to 1500 K. The new instrument will then be used to select possible standard reference materials for thermal conductivity measurements in a temperature range from 300 K to 1500 K.
