Obiettivo Environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) is one of the most important and widespread types of fracture for metallic materials. Damage tolerance design procedures based on fracture mechanics are increasingly employed, but there is as yet no generally accepted standardized test procedure for evaluating the parameters characterizing the susceptibility of materials to EAC. In this project, a new rising displacement test procedure will be developed for the quantitative characterization of the susceptibility of metallic materials to EAC. Seventeen laboratories will carry out tests on different material/environment combinations in order to assess the applicability and reliability of the new procedure in comparison with other procedures (conventional static tests, such as constant load or constant deflection tests, and step loading techniques) for testing environmentally assisted cracking. The results will be used to elaborate guidelines for an accelerated stress corrosion cracking test procedure as an appendix to the ISO Standard 7539-part 6 and as a part of a CEN standard pertaining to EAC testing.
