Study to improve the specification of the cut off wavelength of optical fibre

Ziel

Optical fibre is the dominant medium for communications systems. Each length of fibre must meet a specified performance before being incorporated into telecommunications networks. The cut-off wavelength defines the wavelength above which only one mode is guided. This parameter cannot be as yet measured with satisfactory precision, especially in the case of active fibres. The overall objective of the project is to reduce the uncertainty with which cut-off wavelength is measured down to +/- 2 nm.

The project consists of two phases:

1: research in order to:

- carry out a set of studies of the CCITT test method based on the transmitted power technique, to unambiguously identify the nature and cause of spectral anomalies in both passive and active fibres;
- investigate an innovative test method for the determination of the cut-off wavelength based on the variation with wavelength of the mode field diameter. This method is expected to be less sensitive to spectral anomalies for all fibre types.

2: round-robin intercomparison of measurements of cut-off wavelength, incorporating the improvements in measurement techniques defined in phase 1.
