Obiettivo
New genetics information and technologies are expanding rapidly. The rate of increase of trained medical geneticists and counsellors has not kept pace with genetic discoveries and demand for services. As genetic testing moves into mainstream health care tests will be administered by physicians with no training in genetics. There is concern that these physicians cannot interpret genetic tests adequately and may not comply with ethical and clinical guidelines. Using data from 2 successful BIOMED projects, this project will launch a European collaborative education initiative between geneticists, patient support groups and non-genetics health professionals to identify priority needs for education via an extensive survey of non-geneticists. A future RTD project to develop an educational model will be based on these empirical results.
